Hi
I work part time as a TA. Can my headteacher just change the days I work without consulting me?

If your contract is anything like the ones our TAs are employed on then yes! Generally the contract will say a certain number of hours to be worked but the actual timings/responsibilities tend to be 'at the discretion of the headteacher'

Probably, unless your contract has set days. If it's just a part-time point (e.g. 0.6), then yes they can unfortunately. The only thing you can really do is say you'll be unable to work those days, so will need to hand in your notice if they do decide to change them, and see what they say.

It actually depends how long you’ve been working those hours. If it’s been for years and years it could be deemed as custom and practice. I’d speak to my union.

Thanks, yes I'm waiting for my union to get back to me. Also in touch with contracts and payroll.

It depends on the wording of your contract, but probably yes.

If you aren't able to work the new days, then that's a negotiation to have with your HT. Do you have a union rep in school?

Yes they can in England, in Wales they must consult. Ours changed the timing of the school day without consultation. It's taken me a year to find a new job.
