Part time leadership posts - possible?

Any teachers out there work less than 5 days a week in a leadership position? Head of core subject, assistant head, lead teacher - those type of roles. Just trying to figure out if this is something that actually exists!

I'm holding out for this. There's pretty much nothing like this advertised in my area. It's a real shame not to be using my experience.

I feel exactly the same :(

I feel exactly the same too, looking for something similar but you have to be careful. I did have a part time AHT job for a while but when a new Head came they thought I should do the same work as the other AHTs but on my 3 days. I ended up leaving.

I have a friend who’s a 4 day a week Head. It is possible- just depends on the school/MAT. Her MAT is very proud of its flexible working offer.

Would love to work in a school proud of offering flexible working instead of the opposite. They must lose so many good women people by not doing.

Hod Humanities is PT
Hod PE is
HOD maths and English and science have been PT

I’ve been a part time HOD English but am not any more. I also know a part time AHT. I’ve never seen them advertised as such though; I think the only way to get them is to either get an FT role and then request a reduction in hours once you’re in role, or to phone anywhere with FT jobs advertised and ask if they’d consider PT applicants.

I was SMT in a school when I first went part time.
I later applied for a PT SENCo role, which was SMT too.
Later, into a LA Advisory role, PT.

Yes, Deputy and Assistant Heads on 0.8. Several Heads of Faculty on job-share basis. More staff are PT than FT. Will always consider a request for pt and normally agree. Guess what, retention is very good!

Thank you 😊 you have given me some hope! I did apply for flexible working when I was head of core subject at my present school but was rejected so had to step down. I wonder, when applying for new roles, at what point is the best to mention you would like part time?

Currently we have no part time leadership positions at my school, however one of my AHTs will be returning from maternity after October half term - they want to do 3 days a week which I’ve accepted and will job share with my Head of English who is stepping up as an Associate AHT whilst still having teaching responsibilities.

Probably a phone call during the application stage- there's no point getting to interview to find they won't consider part time, if it's absolutely essential for you?

Ovaeasy · 14/05/2023 21:54

I’m an AHT on 0.8 but I got promoted into the role internally so already had a part time contract.

I’m in primary - it seems rarer in secondary, several around here just won’t do it at all for any leadership roles (which is infuriating and so short sighted).

Lovetotravel123 · 26/05/2023 11:44

I don’t know of any such positions. What I can see is that this often results in jobs going to the person who can do FT rather than the person who would actually be better at the job. Often this is the parent penalty ☹️.
