My teaching lesson needs to be 30 mins statistics/data handling maths lesson with year 4.

My idea is to get the kids to collect data from each other of their favourite ice cream using tally charts then getting them to convert the data to a bar chart.

Does that sound ok? How would I get the children to collect the data safely/efficiently and with 30 responses (one per child)

If this doesn't sound good, how can I make it interactive instead of just a boring answer questions looking at a graph lesson?

I would say your idea is fairly basic and not
sure if it falls in line with the NC for Year 4. Why not look at interpreting data ie look at a line graph below - create the story of the graph. Be as creative as they link - why does the water level go up and then down could be as simple as hot tap, cold tap being ran or as creative as an enormous elephant comes into the bathroom and drinks some of the water. You could come up with all sorts of interpretations and make the lesson all about what does data tell us as in all honesty how many of us draw a graph or bar chart nowadays - we dont so make it a life skill
instead.

Sounds a bit easy to me. I've done that sort of thing with much younger children.
