Years six SATS maths

Sorry, I'm not a teacher, but I have a question.
My DS is taking his SATS next week, and on Friday his TA told him that if a question asks for an answer to one decimal place, he should NOT round up.
ie if the answer is 1.16 he should write 1.1 not 1.2 (to one decimal place)
This is wrong, isn't it? The TA said to only round up if the test specific says so.
It's really confused him!
He was told something else earlier in the week about long division that turned out to be utter rubbish and the teacher had to apologise to both year 6 classes. Confused

HLTA in year 6 for a good few years now. I've marked every KS2 SATs paper since 2016 multiple times as we use them as practice and I don't recall any questions that ask children to round answers to 1dp or similar. We have taught about rounding numbers generally, but that would always involve rounding up correctly as you thought ie 1.16 would round to 1.2. I think either she's wrong or your son has got the wrong end of the stick. Hope he's not stressing about SATs; I hate the pressure they put kids under :(

Thank you so much for replying, I really appreciate it. I shall let him know.

Agree with pp - that just doesn't come up.

They were practicing for their SATS, but maybe not doing actual past papers.
Thanks for putting his mind at rest. He's a bit of a worrier and has very high expectations of himself. I've told him that he has nothing to worry about, and his high school basically ignore the results anyway.

I'm a Year 6 teacher and pp are correct. He needs to know how to round properly but there won't be calculations asking answers to be rounded to a specific dp. He may need to use rounding to complete a problem eg how many 45 seater coaches are required for 256 children. Questions may ask to round to the nearest tenth or hundredth and then he will need to round up or down but these are unlikely to be problem solving type questions.

Anyone got any good resources for maths SATS? I am going to start doing a bit of practice with my daughter who starts Y6 in Sept?

Teachmom81 · 29/07/2023 16:09

Hello, personally I think it's good to let them have a break over the summer as Y6 is an intense year. If you do decide to start to do a bit then you could start with some games. I like the BBC KS2 maths games (free!), CGP has some practice questions online (free). I also like The Great Eduscape. Atom learning is good but £££.
