What do I need to hand notice in?

I’ve been a TA for a year and have now been offered a job in another school who want me to start asap. My notice is a calendar month so in theory I can start in June.

This is my first job in education so I’m not sure what needs to be in place for me to actually resign. In my old business world, my references would be checked and then notice served which can take time. New school has not contacted any of my referees. Thank you in advance for any guidance from those of you who’ve moved settings successfully before.

I would tell the school that you are not willing to hand your notice in until you have a confirmed job offer/contract- which you won't get until they contact your referees and the DBS check etc has gone through. This should focus their minds to contact your referees and get the contract to you ASAP (some schools can be quite slow with this).

I'm sure it would be fine, but you don't want to be left without pay if you hand your notice in and there's a delay with your DBS etc.

As PP said - you want your job offer in writing and confirmed before any resignation takes place.

Thank you, this seems to be a surprise to the new school so I wanted to check with people who’ve been there before.
I have an email offering me the job and it’s terms but nothing more formal and when I chase them they just tell me they want me to start asap.

Be careful. I once worked in a school that offered a job to a TA who was helping a child settle in. She accepted the job and all was fine until…

A few months later the Year 11 child she was supporting left at exam time and the school told her she was no longer needed…she was very upset.

I think it was technically fine but ethically it’s no way to treat people

I applied for a permanent TA role at another school as my fuxed-tetm contract was coming to sn end, the confirmation letter stated fixed-term basis and on starting at the school it became clear this was considered to be very flexible. It is worth checking conditions particularly if you have other options.
