Returning to work FT

This turned into a mammoth late night ramble so long story short: how do you manage returning to teaching FT after maternity?

I’m on mat leave currently with my first baby and I’m loving my time at home with him. It’s every bit as hard and challenging as I thought it would be but I am really cherishing how much love and enjoyment he brings every day.

I am, however, also very much looking forward to returning to work in September! This has taken me somewhat by surprise. I was quite sure during my pregnancy that I would want to return part time but I find that, having weighed up my options, full time seems to be the way forward for me.

Partly the decision has been swayed by the impact going part time would inevitably have on take-home pay but this is not the only reason I feel the decision is right for me.

I teach secondary English and the only way I can guarantee a permanent classroom base is by returning full time - a fixed room would allow me to not have to lug exercise books, class texts and all my own paraphernalia across the school site. I have watched other teachers do this and feel that I would find this very stressful and physically demanding as we have a large site across multiple buildings and floors. Additionally, I would like as few class shares as possible (particularly when it comes to exam groups) and I still want to feel like a part of the department and benefit from the support that comes with being surrounded by colleagues, which is something that I think will be lost if I am constantly travelling across different buildings and not in for half the week.

All this being said, I am still apprehensive about managing workload and home/life balance with a 1 year old when I return so I would really love some advice and helpful tips!

What does a typical day look like for you? How do you organise your day and workload to minimise interference with home life? What can I do over the next couple of months to make my life a little bit easier come September? Any and all survival tips welcomed!

I am interested in this too- I am going full time in September (after 10 years 0.5!) for all the reasons you list, OP

I know that this is an old thread, but can I ask how it went for you? I'm due to return FT tomorrow and also worrying about managing it all :(

@LunaBear26hello! Hope your return to work went well this week! How has it been??

I did indeed go back full time. I can’t lie, it has been difficult at times, however I still believe that at the moment it is the best decision for me.

I am finding that I am better at leaving work at work - I don’t really bring anything home anymore because there’s a bigger incentive to have all that time together as a family. I am still working quite long hours though. At the beginning of the year I was very good at getting in early and leaving early however with the length of last term and all the illnesses we picked up I am pretty exhausted now so I’m back to getting in at normal time and leaving a bit later.

Holidays feel much longer now because I don’t bring any work home with me. They are obviously less relaxing because I have a 16 month old toddler rampaging round the house but it’s a lot of fun and we go to lots of places and meet up with friends.

I am looking forward to next term when I will have gain time from year 11 study leave. As long as I don’t pick up too much cover I should be able to leave by 3.30 most days. I’m also hoping that by next year I will have got back into a good routine and picked up all the new systems that were put in place while I was away so I will feel more confident.

My first week is going OK but I've missed so much and no one has really caught me up on anything yet haha! And if one more person asks if I'm excited to be back...!

I usually get in school at 7.30 because I have to leave early for commute reasons so hoping I can get stuff done in the morning but got Y11 mocks to mark next week and then Y9 assessments too! Going to try really hard not to take things home too! It's so hard though!

I'm so glad for the holidays! Thanks for your reply, it makes me feel a bit better! :)
