NEU votes to reject pay offer

Results read this morning at conference- 98% voted to reject, 66% turnout (this is a higher turnout and higher percentage than the initial indicative ballot on industrial action).

New strike dates announced for 27th April and 2nd May. Kevin and Mary were very clear that the ball is now in Gillian Keegan's court to avert strike action by putting a new offer on the table in the next three weeks.

The union has shown that we can get a vote done quickly on any pay offer- so there is time for her to do something if she is serious.

👏🏻 a very clear message sent!

What a difference there would have been to this if it has been funded and they hadn't insisted schools could afford it!
She isn't listening. I switched back to the NEU as a result of the offer and will strike.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 03/04/2023 10:56

I disagree there would have been a huge difference from the NEU.

4.5% is an insult, however you slice it.

The funding will probably swing the other unions towards reject, but 4.5% when inflation is over 10 is hardly going to solve the recruitment and retention issues is it?

Also no serious movement on workload etc- if the 4.5% had come with a commitment to extra PPA etc, that might have been different.

Extra PPA would make such a difference. The workload is ridiculous.

I think 4.5% might have been acceptable if it had been fully funded. Anything they offer needs fully funded so there are no additional support staff lost or experienced teachers pushed out via support plans.

I agree 👍

I just hope the other Unions get on board. I'm getting quite resentful of doing all the heavy lifting. Also NEU members who vote to strike and then don't go out themselves get my goat. This could limp on for ages with schools only part closed. We need everyone out.

noblegiraffe · 04/04/2023 13:55

ASCL have also voted to reject, 87% on a 56% turnout. They'll need to discuss a strike ballot now.

This is great as it will be obvious that with headteachers rejecting it that the DfE's insistence that schools can afford it is nonsense.

Agree any offer needs to be fully funded.

I disagree 4.5% (that's less than half of inflation right now...) would make any meaningful difference on recruitment and retention.

100% agree- we need to reballot support staff as well, because in many cases they are being used to keep schools open.

Really, really need NASUWT to get on board, but having seen their version of the pay consultation, I don't think it'll happen.
