Part time teaching jobs - please help

My current teaching contract will be ending in the summer and I need to find a new position. It has to be part time as I have young children.

Finding a job for two or three days a week really isn't easy. Should I try applying for full time positions and see if they would consider doing a job share?

Any advice for finding part time teaching? I've done supply and don't really want to go down that road again unless I have to.

Feeling stressed about all this so please help

In the current market where it’s so hard to fill roles, I think it’s worth applying and including a line in the application letter explaining that you’d rather work part time, and asking if they would consider a job share.

hollyivysaurus · 28/03/2023 22:50

In the past I sent a few speculative emails asking if the role could be part time for the right applicant. I did land a part time role from it! I figured the worst they could say was no. So I wouldn’t do a full application, but I don’t think it’s rude to ask.

@hollyivysaurus @OutDamnedSpot
Thank you for your replies. I'm worrying that I'll be out of work as I can can only do part time. Fingers crossed something will come up.

I teach part time. When I was looking for a new job there were only full time jobs advertised in the area I wanted to work so I phoned the schools and spoke to the head to ask if they'd consider part time. They all said yes. I got my current job this way.
Previously, when I moved to a new area, I wrote to several local schools to ask if they would have any vacancies for the next academic year for a part time teacher. I heard back from one and they interviewed me and offered me a job. This was before emails though so I'd probably email now rather than write a letter and post it.
I think it's always worth asking. Often more part time jobs are advertised after the May resignation deadline so you might find there's more opportunities then.

Primary or secondary?

In primary, I'd phone the school and discuss it with the head rather than email. Remember this isn't a busy time for job adverts - you will probably see a lot more after Easter.

@HubertTheGoat primary

Yes, you're right. Next half term should bring more jobs hopefully.

Same as others above, I saw a full time position advertised at a perfect location. I emailed to ask if they would consider part time, had a long phone chat with HoD and got the job. You can only ask.

riseandshine321 · 03/04/2023 08:48

I'm surprised - maybe it depends where you live? Where I am most teaching jobs advertise for full/part time - in my school most of the staff do job-shares.

Can you ask to go for a look around the school before applying? That seems to be pretty common at schools locally to me. Then you can have an informal chat with them about part-time options. If you can’t do that I wouldn’t overly worry. In my experience of jobs advertised at my school, they’re rarely advertised as part-time, but we’ve had a number of people who we employed part-time after they responded to a full-time advert. I think it’s pretty common, I was only talking to a friend today who is a HoF, and they have just employed two part-time and one full
-time teacher, after only advertising full-time positions.
