Long story short. Started a new job in January. School is not what I thought and is affecting my mental health. I have the opportunity to apply for a job that is much more suitable for me.

How do I let my current headteacher know? I am worried about their reaction.

Just say exactly as you have here. Sometimes you just have to be selfish and do what is right for you especially when it is impacting your health.

“Dear ……

I appreciate the experience of working here, but I’m not sure my current position is the right fit for me. So I am taking the opportunity of applying for a position elsewhere, and I hope you are happy to be named for a reference.

Yours faithfully,

…..”

That should be “Yours sincerely” if the letter is addressed to a named person, presumably it will be! Just keep it formal, business-like and professional. Honestly, people move jobs all the time, it’s his/her job to deal with it.

good luck! I’m sure you’ll be fine. Head Teacher’s are used to staff moving on.
