Inadequate school

I’m looking at moving schools and a position has come up at one that Ofsted have graded as ‘requires improvement’ in 2019. Would you go for it? Would the staff be under more pressure or check ups by the head or county? Thank you

Have you read the report and seen what they are RI for? A friend of mine works in an RI school and loves it. The head values the teachers and really works hard to retain them and the school is undersubscribed so her classes are far smaller than mine, which obviously impacts workload. However, her job seems to be mostly pastoral and behaviour management, so I think ultimately it depends on what you hope to get out of it.

RI isn't inadequate...

I'd read the report carefully, and try to work out why the school is RI.

If it's in the process of becoming an academy, or changing trusts, I would probably avoid, if I had the choice.

Thank you for taking the time
to comment. The school became an academy a couple of year before the current head started and then one year later they had Ofsted. All areas apart
from pupils behaviour required improvement. The ofsted report was from 2019, so overdue a new visit now. As leadership was one area that was inadequate, I’m guessing one year as a head might not have been long enough to show impact by the newish head? Just thinking about that too, as they are still the head. Just don’t want to be under crazy scrutiny and hoop jumping as a result of the inadequate grading

I totally agree- the grading doesn’t necessarily reflect the happiness of the staff there.

4 years is a long time and albeit there has been 2 years of disruption due to COVID. I’m surprised OFSTED hasn’t been in that time. Anywho, I wouldn’t really judge a school on an OFSTED visit that was that long ago especially with a new HT in place. They probably didn’t have much time to change stuff in the period from being appointed to OFSTED.
Go and visit the school and see for yourself what it’s like and see if you think you’ll fit in there?

agree @good96. Some schools have a grade that certainly does not match the ambiance!

RI and inadequate are very different things. Inadequate would give me pause to think & I’d want to see a very clear upward trajectory. RI can be for all sorts of reasons & I’ve worked in some really lovely, happy RI schools (that were much better places to work than the outstanding schools I’ve also worked in).
