Striking - worried it will impact me

My team leader is on strike and the rest of my department is apart from a couple of people who have decided against it.

I’m still unsure. I know it’ll impact me financially and I worry people will think less of me or could it affect my reference?

my main concern is the financial implications. Could anyone advise me?

The financial impact will be the only impact. It's not going to affect a potential reference, or make people think less of you. If they do, they're arseholes who aren't worth worrying about. Your team leader is striking, so they're obvious supportive. The financial impact is obviously a big impact, especially with 4 days of action. Bit when you consider that tax, national insurance and pension contributions are all deducted from the lost wages, it's less of an impact than many fear.

thank you for this. I am only doing the two days. Do you have a vague idea of what the loss would be? My maths is crap!

Tax and NI are about 30%, pension about 9%, so if you're losing, for example £100 (which is about right for MPS6), it would only be a £61 deduction to your pay.

For each day that is.

If you don't strike you are tacitly accepting poor pay and conditions. We lose in the short term but hopefully gain in the long term. It seems like you have a lot of colleagues striking so you will have strength in numbers. The NEU have a hardship fund which you can apply to if needed. They don't want anyone not to strike because of financial hardship, because clearly those are the people the strike is most intended to help.

It's hard to be specific because it depends on your deductions including student loan.

These are average deductions, but if you have student finance deductions, your actual take home loss will be less, I believe.

Your local union branch may have a hardship fund to help.

I understand the fear around striking but if you are worried about people thinking less of you... those on strike may think less of you if you go in. They won't say anything, but they may think it.
