Coronation day Monday 8th May- don’t work a Monday

Hi,

Are there any teachers on here that don’t work a Monday and know what our rights are re:pay on the Coronation Day B/H? Have directed hours been adjusted to account for new bank holiday? I missed out before due to Queen’s funeral and wondering if there’s anyone in the know?

The aim of the bank holiday is to allow people who might otherwise be obliged to work to have an opportunity to engage in important national events. It’s not a regular bank holiday and you already have the day off so you don’t need the bank holiday award.

Getting an extra bank holiday in most professional jobs in reality means you work harder on the days around the date to make up the work. Most people I know will wfh that day so they don’t fall behind on work.

I just meant that are the directed hours shifting to account for it? Because if they are surely that will affect those part-time teachers.

The government changed directed time/required school days for the Queens funeral last year to accommodate the extra bank holiday. 189 days instead of 190 days.

I'd assume something similar will happen this year for the coronation.

It’s really annoying to miss out on another Monday BH isn’t it? I think it’s just bad luck and we’ll miss out again but I feel your frustration!

PotKettel there's no need to be snippy. I'm sure the OP has lots of experience of wfh to make sure she doesn't fall behind. It's what teachers do.

Thank you,
ha yes unfortunately too much experience of WFH in our profession for a 9-3 job 😉

Yes I know, so frustrating! Feel like I’ve chosen the short straw with my end of the week (weds-Fri)

Directed hours are adjusted and you should be working the equivalent of a day less (or proportion of a day as you are part time). This has been the case for years last few years with the Queen's Jubilee and funeral. Our school paid staff who didn't work on those days rather than offer them the extra holiday. This entitlement is a statutory if you work to the burgandy book Pay and Conditions, so that part time staff aren't treated less favourably than full time staff.

Thanks for sharing this ☺️

I am in a similar situation. I was told I can have 0.6 of a day off for the Queen's funeral, so am assuming it will be the same for the King's coronation!
