Relocating and looking for a job

Hi,

I'm looking to relocate with my family from the London area to the East Midlands.

I'm currently in a leadership post and am looking for similar, but having kept an eye out on many trust websites, the TES and just general googling around, there doesn't seem to be much on offer.

Am I looking in the wrong places or is it more common for leadership posts to be promoted from within in this area? I don't really want to have to take a step back into class full time to be able to get in to a school/trust unless I absolutely have to, but I'm wondering if this is the norm as noting at this level seems to be advertised.

I'm looking for either a smaller school deputy post or I'd consider assistant Head in a larger, looking at primary.

Thanks

E-teach might be another one to try if you aren't already, and I believe everything in state has to be advertised on the DfE website.

I don't know the area, but leadership roles do just come up more rarely don't they and a lot of people don't leave them unless they can get a promotion or they're retiring? So it may be a case of taking what you can get until the right job comes up?

Are there middle leadership roles available for your subject?

Thanks, hadn't explored eteach, will have a look

I think you’re just a tiny bit early. Most leaders will look to move in September so won’t resign until the next round. I bet there’s loads more in 3/4 weeks.

That's a good ping actually.

I was wondering if sending my cv and a covering letter out to trusts in the area I'll be would be a good idea or not?

A good point! Blush

There is a problem with getting leadership roles in primary. Teachers on the upper pay scale get stuck because schools can't afford them. It is very unusual in my area for primary schools to advertise upper pay jobs. If you move you have to take a pay cut unless you are willing to get a leadership role. This means that in schools that are nice to work in, they end up with a very top heavy staff. Leadership roles don't get advertised because they are recruited from within then the school can employ an ect to replace the ups teacher. The system is broken.

It's a leadership role I'm looking for. I was that teacher stuck on ups for a long time, fortunately in a school where my experience was valued and respected. I'm now on the leadership scale.

Agree the system is broken though!

You’re best off waiting a couple of weeks until more SLT vacancies crop up as SLT don’t usually leave their positions mid year unless it is urgent - eteach/ TES you’re on the right track for sure.
Have you found a property or desired area in the EM to move to? It is a large place with generally good transport links and I’d consider expanding the area you search for.

currytime · 19/02/2023 13:37

Hi, yes, I have an area in mind and have searched within a 10 mile radius. Can't be too far from the new home though as I have my own kids to be home at a reasonable time for.

I'm East Midlands and have always found my jobs on the county council websites (so Notts CC etc) not TES or individual MAT sites. The primaries around me are still mostly non-academised.

currytime · 19/02/2023 15:55

That's really useful to know; where I am almost all primaries are in academy trusts
