I'm looking at tutoring and was wondering if anyone here does it? As well as teaching in a school or instead of? How much per session? Any pros cons and agencies?

I moved away from classroom teaching gradually and am now a full-time tutor. I get my students from word of mouth, mainly from one large primary school. We live in an 11+ area and I primarily tutor for the test. I charge £45 per hour and tutor around 12 students per week. I love it but it can only be done outside of school hours. I make around £30k a year but obviously don't get any sick pay or pension contributions.

I’m retired and a maths tutor. I only want a few pupils but there is a huge demand for maths especially years 10/11 and sixth form. My tutees are usually referred to me by my ex colleagues or they hear of me by word of mouth. I don’t use an agency.

I charge £50 an hour for A level, £45 for gcse. I don’t take younger pupils.

Imtutormon the side but find there isn’t enough work to give up teaching. It’s a nice secondary income, however and pays for our holiday most years.

If you teach English/maths/science you may fare better.

I left teaching after 25 years as a primary class teacher and now tutor as my main income. I tutor 15-18 children each week, after school and on Saturday mornings, charging £40 per hour. I really enjoy it, it's so rewarding working with children one to one and they tend to make lots of progress. I work with some with additional needs and some who just need a bit of a confidence boost and help catching up. I haven't needed to use an agency, I set up a Facebook page, Google maps listing and basic website and people found me. Once I had a few families word of mouth really took off. I would really recommend tutoring - all the nice aspects of teaching without the politics and stress!
