Strike - 3 days in month of march - living hand to mouth already

3 days less pay in month of march. My wage comes in and goes out with about £50 buffer left. My heart says yes but with being right on limit money wise I dont know what i will do with 3 days less pay.

Contact the union about the hardship fund?

crumpetsryummy · 16/01/2023 20:15

NEU site says hardship will NOT be used to supplement lost pay on strike days.

From what you’ve said, you are in hardship for other reason?

WeAreAllLionesses · 16/01/2023 20:35

Our area have sent out an email asking people to get in touch with the district secretary on this issue. Email them and see what they say?

Will email, agree yes hardship but still extremely concerned for the month of March. One day is going to be very hard, extremely worried about 3 days.

Speak directly to your rep and ask

Your region/district will likely also have a hardship fund set up, so ask your rep or get in contact with your district secretary directly. They will very likely be able to help.

But it sounds to me like you can't afford not to strike. What happens if your bills increase further? There have definitely been people who've had £50 per month increases across all their bills this year unfortunately.

Also, the deductions may not be as bad as you think, as it may e.g. take you below a tax threshold or a student loan repayment threshold for that month, so you actually get more take home pay, bizarre as it sounds.

Apply to the hardship fund and remember that situations like this are why the strike needs to be solid

That fund in the bit you've cited is national but the districts have the funds for hardship. I'm a rep and have had a number of staff tell me they are applying.
