Applying for new job- etiquette

I’ve been in the same role for 21 years (MFL teacher) and am planning to apply for a job in a different school. Do I need to inform my school straight away or only if I am called for interview? Sorry this is probably really obvious but I’d rather not say anything unless I have to.

Yes - you need to let your HT know before you apply to gain their endorsement. If they question, just state that you’re looking for new opportunities to expand your skills and experience.

Oh really the HT? Ok, thanks a lot for replying.

You have to give your HT as a reference for any education job, and some schools do call references before interview, although this is getting rarer.

You don't have to inform the HT in advance though, it's not a legal requirement or anything. It's generally seen as a professional courtesy.

Do you think they'll react badly?

No not really. It just feels like such a big leap after so many years! I’m sure they won’t be that bothered, I just wish it could all be more discreet like in other professions!

I hope references before interview is not getting rarer. It's a fundamental part of KCSIE and should be carried out before all education interviews.

This! It's part of the safer recruitment process. I was shocked when I started my job (admin) in September and they were still authenticating my references as I unpacked my bag onto my desk! I questioned the central team in an admin meeting recently about this and they said 'technically' we should be trying to get references before interview but not to worry too much if not. Hmm
