Dealing with a UTI when at work?

Hi all,

Bit of an embarrassing one but I’m not sure what to do

I’ve developed a UTI over the past 24hrs but we start back at school tomorrow and I’ve got a full day of teaching

At the moment I’m feeling like I urgently need to go to the toilet every 5-10mins, and I’ve no idea how I’m going to concentrate teaching lessons tomorrow and can’t bear the idea of not being able to go to the toilet for 2 hours at a time.

Due to New Years I haven’t been able to contact a doctor or pharmacy yet.

Any ideas of what’s best to do?!

Thanks in advance!

A UTI is one of the very few occasions I have taken time off!

I would see how you sleep tonight (I used to be up all night with them) then if you haven't slept well and still feel really uncomfortable I would call in sick and spend the day drinking plenty of fluids and get some ABs from the doctor.

If you went into school and didn't drink enough you could potentially make it much worse which would result in more than 1 day off.

Drinking bicarb of soda in water will help. It's the same as those sachets the pharmacy has.

Thank you so much for your reassurance - I really appreciate it.

Will keep on the fluids tonight and cross my fingers for a decent sleep.

Am pleased that pharmacists can prescribe antibiotics now - Tesco pharmacy opens at 6.30am tomorrow so can hopefully get it sorted quickly.

Take care 😊😊

You're allowed to take time off when you're ill. I once did leave a class when I had a UTI- it wasn't really allowed but the alternative was wetting myself. I think in future, I'd take the time off, because you can't always guarantee it's a class that can be left.

A colleague who had recurrent UTIs which age worked through ended up in hospital. I'd really suggest you take tomorrow off to get started on medication properly.

That’s very true. I imagine in many jobs it’s fairly straightforward to go to the toilet when you need, but certainly not in teaching!

That must’ve been uncomfortable for her!

Thank you for the advice - so nice to have such an encouraging and supportive community 😊

I managed using one of those long hot water bottles wrapped around my tummy! I was sooo lucky in that I was out of class that day (supply had been booked already) so could hide away in the library and visit the toilet when needed. Sitting down helped too. The one positive about my GP since covid is the ability to email. I got an email back within a couple of hours saying a prescription had been sent to the local pharmacy. Amazing service!

I’ve got one of those bottles and I love it. That’s great!

I actually ended up phoning the pharmacy and the lovely pharmacist asked some questions and prescribed over the phone (the doctors were being difficult about needing a urine sample and their opening hours are not particularly teacher-friendly!)

Thank you all 😊 feeling much improved already
