Hi! I am building a tool to support discussion at school with the aim of stimulating children to appreciate both sides of a discussion.

Particularly relevant for the humanities & social sciences but it is broadly relevant in any setting whereby discussion occurs.

Students would be able to contribute to the 'decision tree' and on any topic - such as 'Who is the greatest president of all time?'

Could you let me know if you would find this useful for your classes?

It depends. Are you also providing devices for all of my pupils?

Korero · 30/12/2022 08:25

Great question! It would not be provided at first, but compatible with mobile or laptops. Alternatively it can be done from one laptop with vocal participation from everyone.

You're making an assumption that all pupils will understand enough about the topic so that they can debate it.

OutDamnedSpot · 30/12/2022 11:32

And also an assumption that teachers can’t already teach how to consider both sides of a discussion, without the aid of expensive devices…

@madnessitellyou is correct. Look at the thread from earlier this week about things teenagers don't know. I recently had to explain what Horlicks was to my Y9 top set ("Like Ovaltine"). They had to explain to me what Tik Tok was. Vast cultural differences between the generations.

ElegantPuma · 30/12/2022 11:36

@OutDamnedSpot also makes a good point. "Done from one laptop with vocal participation from everyone" sounds like the kind of thing teachers have done since time immemorial, but with a chalkboard / whiteboard rather than a laptop.

TeenDivided · 31/12/2022 09:35

I'm not a teacher, but I'd just like to comment that just because something can be done with software doesn't mean it should. Is this really more beneficial than dividing a whiteboard in half and labelling the halves For and Against?

Great points from everyone - and thanks so much for contributing :). Some reflecting to do!
thanks so much
