Does anyone teach 0.8?

I'm working 4 days a week in a primary school. Recently have been thinking about how this balances out with things like parents' evenings, meetings, report writing etc. I would like to hear from anyone else who works these hours (or manages those that do) if they have been given TOIL or any other accommodations to balance out teaching a full class. I've been told I can take 2 hours in lieu for extra staff meetings I've attended this term beyond my contracted hours. Thanks in advance!

I'm secondary. I do 80% of staff meetings . All parents evenings and 4 out 5 inset days.

If a parents evening lands on non working day they pay me an hourly rate to attend.

I’m 0.8 in primary. Have full responsibility for my class, do all reports, all parents evenings, all staff training (because it’s on a day I work), all team meetings, full planning responsibility. Sometimes I feel like it’s not fair because I have the same workload as a FT teacher. If I attend an inset on my normal day off I get paid extra for that.

ProfessorGambol · 12/11/2022 17:50

I do get the same PPA as FT teachers tho, so that’s something.

jamontoastaddict · 12/11/2022 17:53

@ProfessorGambol do you have to plan for your day off 😮

natterer · 12/11/2022 19:23

@ProfessorGambol Have you raised this with anyone? You must be way over your directed time. It's difficult though isn't it because I wouldn't want anyone else to do my parents' evenings etc... just feel it should be balanced out somehow.

@jamontoastaddict We have parents' evening week - all appointments after school - so I just organise them for the days that I work... Sounds like your time is accounted for fairly, is that right?

Yes we are well Looked after. Part time do 30 mins duty per week. I do one lunch per week so I get a free lunch too.

jamontoastaddict · 12/11/2022 19:51

I do have 20 hours contact time a week which is too much really for part time.

ProfessorGambol · 12/11/2022 20:19

@natterer I’ve not asked about directed time. In fact I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it calculated at this school. I don’t have to plan for my day off, because we’re a big school, so we share the planning out across the year group. I’m only in my 2nd year at my current school. Was 0.6 previously, and it definitely feels like a lot more work being 0.8, because previously I shared my class with another 0.6 teacher, so we shared e.g. report writing and assessments. But now my day off is covered differently, so there’s no other class teacher to share the load with.

I don’t have to plan for my day off, because we’re a big school, so we share the planning out across the year group You shouldn't have to plan for your day off because you're not paid for it, not because you're sharing planning! I hope you plan less than full time teachers in your year group.

OP I teach 80% and get the same PPA as full timers but also do the same duties, all parents eves, all classroom displays (primary, change half termly so time consuming) etc. It's rubbish in some ways but equally I love not handing over to another teacher, worrying about sharing planning with someone else etc. I just get on with my own thing which I enjoy.

0.8 is tricky because you are the main teacher so end up with all the class responsibilities. It was my least favourite combination of all the part time hours I’ve worked!

Now I’m 0.8 slt - 1.5 days of that are out of class. It’s better class wise as my job share & I split everything pretty much 50/50 (tho we do parents eve together as we find that works best for us). I go to all staff meetings but that’s the slt bit more than anything else. I find it best not to add up the extra hours!

I am on a 0.8 contract in a junior school in a non class based position as a groups teacher. Every year group has a groups teacher who takes a few children out of each of the year group classes (3 form entry) to make 4 smaller maths and English groups. I also do interventions and PPA/ECT cover in the afternoon. I have 80% PPA and lead a subject, do parents evenings, all staff meetings and a weekly after school club. If I attend an inset on my day off, I am given a day off in lieu. The most annoying thing that has happened since I have been an 0.8 teacher is that SLT have set our planning allocation in every year group. Rather than have the autonomy to sit down and divide planning out between us, SLT have decided all groups teachers will plan English for the whole of autumn term. I plan 4 days because I am part time. It’s a ridiculous workload to have for an entire term when we've always rotated every half term and never done core subjects back to back.

SE13Mummy · 20/11/2022 19:51

I've been 0.8 for the past 17 years (primary). I do everything that falls on the four days I work but also do all reports, assessment etc. and have full responsibility for the class. If SLT arrange things for my day off and want me there, I sometimes have a day off in lieu but if it's not possible for me to go in, they have to manage without me. I get the same PPA as those who teach full-time but am a stickler for making sure I don't take on the planning for my day off, in spite of the best efforts of the HLTA who has the class on that day.

I've never calculated whether or not there are staff meetings etc that take me over my directed time. Having one whole day off each week is what was (and is) important to me so I have generally just got on with the peripheral stuff and put my foot down with things like the HLTA wanting planning from me. On the whole, it's worked for me.
