Working in Europe

so my husband and I both work on education and would like to work abroad for a while (a year plus). Does anyone know if having a job in an international school means your spouse and child can move also and if working in an international school has downsides? We’d love to hear your experiences!

thanks!

I think it varies in different schools, but I’ve known several couples where one has been given a job and then a second job has been ‘found’ for the other, and another couple where one got a job and the head then emailed the heads at other international schools locally to support her spouse in also getting a job. Employing couples can be beneficial for the schools as the living costs are reduced.

Downsides my friends told me about were lack of understanding of SEN and less ‘research based’
CPD.

I’ve never done it myself though, so this is all hearsay.

Typically international schools outside of Europe have better packages. If you go somewhere like Mongolia, they pay your flight, shipping allowance, rent, health insurance etc. They’ll probably even collect you from the airport. Usually you will get 2 dc in the school for free. They will probably help you she find something.
In Europe they’ll (typically) expect you to be much more independent I.e. finding your own house. Depending on the country, your dh will probably get a visa but might not get any help finding a job. That’s obviously easier in Europe because things will work in a more similar way, but if you don’t speak the language well it can be harder. You’re likely to get 2 school places for your dc still though.
