Do I tell the head I’m applying for another job?

Hi all,

I’m applying for a job at another school - I like my current school but have found a vacancy that fits me perfectly (Easter start).

Do I tell the head I’m applying for another job? Obviously I’ll be using them as a reference, so I assume that they will find out anyway.

If yes, how is best to tell them? By email or by conversation?

The only reason I’m hesitant to say is because I work in a small school where word gets around quickly, and if I don’t get the job then I’m worried about how it will affect working with the head, HoD etc at my current school

Thanks in advance 😊

Yes, you have to. Usually face to face. Just email her secretary and ask for a brief meeting, then explain that the job has come up, why it would work for you, etc.

It’s a weird thing about teaching that everyone knows when you’re applying for jobs.

Yes you do - at the end of the day, people move on in their careers so it is inevitable that it will happen some day. Just use the opportunity with your HT to thank them for all that they have done but you feel the time is right to explore further opportunities. As a HT myself, I have had many conversations of the kind over the years. If I cannot facilitate the development and progression at my school then sometimes colleagues do need to move on and do what is best for them. Don’t worry about it. I would just advise to deal with this in a professional manner and if you are successful in the appointment, leave on good terms too.

Yes, time to explore other opportunities and say that you’re grateful for the ones you’ve had in your current post.
