Pay according to experience

Any one have experience of this at interview? How negotiable does it tend to be? Are schools obligated to honour previous MPS?
How best could one advocate for the most appropriate salary?

There is no pay portability any more. You would need to be able to demonstrate a good reason why they should pay you "more".

Thank you for your reply- Does that mean you could be offered at any pay point?

Has anyone successfully negotiated their current pay scale / accepted a position at a lower pay point than their previous employment?

Also, if you further your career in the same institution does this mean you will essentially be starting from scratch in terms of working your way up the main scale? (I am not talking about the addition of TLR etc)

Yep. They can offer you whatever they want.
Our head of computing negotiated up - he was unqualified when he started but when he was appointed to HOD, he negotiated a higher starting point + the TLR

They do not have to match your current salary, but the only time I have seen people offered pay cuts is a) moving to FE, where pay is generally lower anyway and b) where the school won't offer UPS but will offer M6.

Equally, I know people who are teachers of shortage subjects who have negotiated higher pay e.g. they would go on to M4 that year, but have asked for M5 or even higher instead. This is often where they know they'd be the only teacher of e.g. physics in a school, or they're being asked to run a qualification solo which no-one else in the school can offer.

Some schools will be really offended if you try to negotiate pay, but I think it's perfectly reasonable when they say "would you take this job if offered?" to say something like "I really love your school, and would like to work here, but I could only afford to do so if you matched my current pay."

I've never heard of an experienced teacher being offered M1 and having to start again from scratch.

All the schools around me seem to have lots of vacancies (given the time of year) so they won't want to lose someone keen for the job over pay.

I had 6 years out to raise my two close together kids. I had been on M6 with a tlr. On return I couldn't find an M6 job all,had togo back to M3. This was in 2010. Since then i've only ever managed to get back to M6 plus tlr because every move i've made since then has only offered that. UPS is a massive no no in my area and the evidence and hoop jumping to get it is daft. I've decided to sit where i am and changed sectors- i'd prefer to sit at M6 with no work to do of an evening or weekend. Not the way it should be though.

Oh wow, thank you for sharing. Can I ask-was it only at interview you learnt the positions would only employ at M3 or what it stated in the advert? Do you think that your time out impacted on the pay scale offered?

Yep, the time out impacted but the biggest issue was that I live rurally and all the local schools were academised so no burgundy book portability.

TwitTw00 · 31/10/2022 20:36

I've always asked on the phone before organising to look round whether they can realistically afford to pay M6 or whatever the upper end of the scale is on the advert. My current head told me she really respected me for it.
