Are you getting the 5% pay increase this term?

Just as in the title really, has your school announced yet that you will be getting this 5% pay increase that the government has promised, or are they holding off awarding it? Mine has just announced that they’re waiting until the outcomes of negotiations between government and the Unions before we get any pay increase at all. I’m not very happy about that as that may never happen, the unions and government may never agree on anything more, so how long are we going to be expected to wait? As far as the government are concerned they’re not even in negotiations with the Unions, 5% is what we’re getting, so why not pay it to us now? If we are successful in securing more through strikes, then they can bump up the %, but why the refusal to pay the promised 5% now? What is your school’s stance in this, are mine unreasonable or is this pretty standard (even if I really don’t agree with it)?

Its not really comparable with the rail strikes. The rail strikes aren't really about pay, they are more about job changes including ticket office closures etc. The RMT are refusing to accept changes/modernisation, its a lot more than just pay offers.

Do we know anything more about this? I haven't had a pay rise

Our LA have approved the new pay scales and we were told on Friday we’ll get it backdated in next month’s pay.

I've heard nothing at all. I work for an academy. Surely they cannot ignore the pay rise completely?

I've heard nothing at all and I work for a primary school still under the LA!

Why @Newrumpus ? Have your school told you there not going to honour the government promised 5%?

Sorry - it seems I will if it goes ahead. Having been excluded from all but the tiniest pay rises for so long, I assumed I would be ineligible.

pinkyponkyplink · 27/10/2022 19:19

Is this for ups staff too?

Yes. The percentages are different for MPS and UPS staff, but a payrise has still been proposed all round.

Violashift · 28/10/2022 12:39

We are getting the pay increase. They said if it changes due to strikes they will add more later if it happens.

In most schools, you won't see it until your November/December pay packet. In some MATs, it will take even longer. Ask your school or union rep about it.

My head announced in September that unless funded by the government, we won’t be getting any across the board pay rise. Wish I’d known how screwed over with money I was going to be at this new school. Big academy chain in our area too.

My school too, with the uplift applied since the start of this academic year. My school is recently ex-LA, transferred to a newly established MAT in the Summer term.

donttellmehesalive · 09/11/2022 19:38

My mat is paying it with November salary backdated to September.

Meredusoleil · 09/11/2022 20:03

My school is paying the 5% in December pay, backdated to September.

Don't know about any further increases yet. I suppose it depends what the unions manage to negotiate/the outcome of any potential strike action.

Lal33 · 21/11/2022 15:42

We are getting the already promised 5% this month, with any additional (🤣) resulting from the dispute to be back-paid if and when there's a resolution.

Academies are screwed for money in general - newer ones don't have massive reserves, they aren't allowed to post a deficit budget, they aren't allowed to borrow money, they are strongly encouraged to save to build a reserve for emergencies....

When schools start going under financially it will be smaller MATs and stand alone academies that feel it first.

Benjispruce4 · 05/12/2022 17:13

Ours were announced this week. 10% for support staff. Very happy that we’ve been recognised at last.

Benjispruce4 · 05/12/2022 17:13

Oh and backdated to April!

bonjovifan35 · 20/12/2022 08:02

Yes, 5% on ups but not on tlr. Backdated to Sept in December pay. Equal to less than £90 pcm

Pushkinia · 21/12/2022 11:58

I got the payrise in the December pay - I didn’t expect it, as we were told there was no budget for it, but the service must have managed to agree a deal with the Council.

Dweebie · 18/01/2023 18:58

Is anyone else still waiting for their 5%?

SleepymummyZzz · 19/01/2023 07:16

I’m still waiting for mine 😢 I assumed it was because the pay award is in dispute. We are an LA school so they have to honour the pay rise right? Can’t manage without it and had to pay for Christmas on my credit card as my rise didn’t come through in time!

Dweebie · 19/01/2023 19:02

Thanks @SleepymummyZzz . My colleague also said it's due to the dispute but my understanding was they would award the 5% anyway in the meantime. In any case, still waiting.
