Part time & staff meetings

Just curious to know how part timers manage staff meetings?
If you job share and it falls on your day how do you manage things? Does your partner teacher come in on their days off so that you do an equal share?

If it's your day you go. If it's your day off you cannot be asked to go in unless you are paid.

Thanks, that is my understanding too but I'm not sure how the directed time aspect works. What if the person who's day they fall on doesn't want to go to them all? Also won't the person who doesn't work that day owe directed time?

I only work mornings and I don't go back because theoretically I could be working at another school in the afternoons. Does it depend on haw many hours you are expected to work in your contract? I'm not sure how it's all worked out. People a bit miffed now because the bank holiday is on a Monday and people who work at the end won't get a day off 🤷‍♀️

When I worked part time, the school alternated which night was staff meeting each half term so for 3 half terms a year, it fell on my day so I attended, and for the other 3 half terms, it fell on my job share's working day so they attended.

If you're part time and the staff meeting falls on your day then you only need to go to the same ratio as your part time status - 0.5 goes to half, 0.6 goes to 6 out of 10 etc. If you are told to go to them all then you are discriminated against as you have to attend more time, proportionally, after school than your full time colleagues. Burgundy Book is very clear on this. Some schools make it fairer by alternating days to fit their part-timers, or having detailed minutes for those not attending. If you are in school, and want to go to them all anyway, then it's your choice but there shouldn't be an expectation.

Thanks all. It's a tricky one as they fall on a Tue which isn't my working day. My jobshare partner is saying that she doesn't want to go to them all. SLT say one of us has to attend and have suggested I come in for my pro rata share. This would mean I have to go in on my day off every other week, drive over the other side of town, can't fetch my kids from school and have to pay for wrap around care those days. I've told them I'm not prepared to do it.
I sympathise with my jobshare partner and have suggested that they alternate the staff meeting days but they don't seem to want to change them.
Some of the other job shares do this though they live close to school and don't have young children. I'm worried I will look unreasonable!

You absolutely don't have to go in on a day you don't work. It is up to the school to make the staff meetings meet the regulations of the part-timers contract, not the other way around. You are not being unreasonable.

I worked 4 days so went to 4/5 of meetings. Our staff meetings were a PITA as they were always on Tuesdays or Thursdays to suit the HT's childcare and she expected staff who were on afternoon NCCT to come back in for them.

What @thebookeatinggirl said.

I have been a part timer for some years now and I get really fed up with this shit. They pay me 60% of FTE equivalent for 3 days. I do not go in on non working days unless payment is offered up front, they ask very nicely and there is a good reason (which would generally be something one-off). Of course it is possible to vary the day of meetings, minute them, etc.

cansu · 17/09/2022 09:00

This is one of those situations where you look sad and say that unfortunately you can't due to other commitments. Say not one word more. They need to sort out a solution. The obvious one being she does her percentage of directed time. The others are minuted and you both read the minutes. This is SLT being stubborn frankly.

LyndaLaHughes · 24/09/2022 22:56

Categorically not allowed. They are in really shaky ground here. Your job share need o to attend meetings pro rata and needs to stand her ground. Making her go to every meeting is categorically not allowed and classed as unfair treatment of part- timers and discrimination and illegal. It's that simple .

I.have just gone part-time and our HOD simply changed our meeting day to a day I work. I am waiting to find out about Parents' Evening which falls on my day off. I feel I want to attend as my y7 form have only just started but will only do so if I am.paid or given the time back.
