When do you get to know your new class? I'm KS1 special school . The school goes up to ks4 and starts at nursery. I could be moved anywhere . it s seriously causing me anxiety!
When do you all find out about classes? We will be doing transition this year for children but it's a few morning on the last full week so mid July! That seems a long way away.
I'm hoping to start sorting/moving/planning asap.

Generally I think - as you have even suggested at in your post - that once staff know, then we tend to focus on the children we will have the following year, so, if staff find out too early, then dc can lose 1/6 of the school year with some place marking.
So I think end of June is pretty common.

In my old school, it was end of June/beginning of July. Basically as late as possible before the kids moving up day.

In my current school, they found out in May! Far too early imho.

We got told classes about 6 weeks ago - we finish next week. Staff had to submit their first 3 choices and HT tried to accommodate them as far as possible.
Kids got a letter home last week telling them their new teachers, then met them the following day.

Are you in an independent school and in the UK?

RaraRachael · 20/06/2022 21:59

No I'm in a state primary in Scotland. Why?

SpringIntoChaos · 21/06/2022 06:11

Normally straight after the 31st May cut off for anyone handing in their notice 🤣 However this year, because staff actually DID hand in their notice ON 31st May, we are now having to wait until replacements are found (which I'm pissed off about, because why should new staff get to pick where they teach, and the rest of us get moved somewhere we'd hate just to accommodate them? Doesn't seem fair, but that's what we've been told! 🤬)

Because your summer holidays start earlier than in England!

RaraRachael · 21/06/2022 18:07

Yes our summer holidays always start end of June/start of July but then we start back mid-August.

The teachers at my school got told about two weeks ago, TAs (I'm one of them!) are still waiting. We've been told we'll know before transition day (Friday week). I'm trying to be patient!

wineandsunshine · 21/06/2022 19:52

Our transition days are 4/5th July and we still don't know year groups.....

Because most schools would want to be able to ease a new teacher in where they are most confident.
Most schools would aim to put any new starter with a supportive, helpful year group partner.
Because most HTs / SMTs put considerable thought into balancing a child's journey through school and give different class groups experience of having a make teacher or having a job share partnership or being in the NQT's class or being in the DHT's class or whatever.
Because there are sometimes reasons why a particular classroom (stairs, or across the playground) might be more difficult for a teacher to use
Because some classes might benefit more from someone with an additional skill (sports skills, knowledge or enthusiasm; music maybe or drama; or experience with a particular special need.)

When you know all the teachers available to you you are in a better position to get all the balances right.

RaraRachael · 22/06/2022 17:23

Our existing teachers get to say what stage they'd like to teach, then any new appointments just have to fit into the gaps. Having said that, we have a particularly tricky P6/7 class next year so an experienced teacher volunteered to take them rather than have an NQT teaching them.

wineandsunshine · 22/06/2022 19:53

We were told today! I'm changing year groups!

Silverbirch2 · 22/06/2022 23:13

Still waiting!
