Extra Bank Holiday

Very simple one. Are you getting the extra Bank Holiday? Either on the day itself or rearranged as a day off at some other point in the school year?
We aren’t (Primary school) and I’m feeling a bit grumpy!

You should! The DfE amended the school year to 189 days to facilitate it. The school where I work took it as an extension to October half term. My children’s school are taking it on 22 July.

MrsHamlet · 14/05/2022 18:00

189 pupil days; 194 staff ones.
Your union reps should've spotted this when the calendar went out

spanieleyes · 14/05/2022 20:06

We had ours added on to the Easter holiday, so nearly 3 weeks off!

sakura06 · 14/05/2022 20:59

Agree with everyone else that the DfE amended STPCD for it this year. There was a bit of a lengthy process about ensuring it where I work and we've just been told which date now (there should've been consultation before this academic year's calendar was put together). Please speak to your union!

JaffavsCookie · 14/05/2022 21:08

You definitely should get an extra day, and there is still time for your school to sort it.
We had an extra day in the autumn term ( though i had bloody covid and was in bed so didn’t feel the benefit).

Oncemoreuntothebreachagain · 14/05/2022 22:12

Are they allowed to take it off the 5 days inset? SLT have done LOADS of twightlight sessions this year. I’m wondering if that’s where they have taken it from. I’m suspicious though as when anyone has asked we can’t get a straight answer.

The students have to do 189 days. Staff have to to 194.

LyndaLaHughes · 15/05/2022 00:56

You categorically should be getting it. It's a directive from the DFE.

The DfE have amended the Education (School Day and School Year) (England) Regulations to reduce the 2021/22 school year for maintained schools by one day to account for this additional bank holiday. This reduces the number of pupil contact days from 190 to 189.

Thanks everyone for the information. I’m going in tomorrow to ask awkward questions and won’t take no this time!

So I’ve done a bit of digging and apparently it’s at the heads discretion. Is it?

No! It's an explicit amendment to STPC! Is it an academy or maintained school?

Oncemoreuntothebreachagain · 15/05/2022 14:17

Maintained but going through academy process.
The “heads discretion “ comment came from someone else at school who raised this issue with our office manager.

Oncemoreuntothebreachagain · 15/05/2022 14:18

And now I sound like a real too , but what is STPC?

Oncemoreuntothebreachagain · 15/05/2022 14:18

”fool” that should have read!

Standard Teachers Pay and Conditions. Your local authority has very likely issued guidance for schools which will still apply to you for now.

Our SLT tried that one. I put on my union hat and they backed off sharpish.
It's at the head' discretion WHEN to take it but not whether to take it if you're a maintained school.

Oncemoreuntothebreachagain · 15/05/2022 14:37

I think that’s where we are vulnerable in our school. Very very few maintained school near here and we have zero official union representation in school although lots are members. Looks like it’s me again raising the uncomfortable questions as per usual. 🙄

And thank you everyone! Your advice and expert knowledge is much appreciated by me and the staff that don’t even know it yet!

If you don't have a school rep, then contact your regional office for support. And if you're always the one asking the questions, maybe consider becoming the rep.

Lulu1919 · 15/05/2022 19:38

No

Categorically wrong. It's statutory.

LyndaLaHughes · 15/05/2022 22:07

Sorry don't know why that previous post is like that. That is categorically wrong it should say- it is NOT at HT discretion. It is statutory. It is a directive from the DFE.

LyndaLaHughes · 15/05/2022 22:13

Just to be clear- it's a pupil day it is to be taken from as well- not an INSET day.
