Jury summons as a teacher

Anyone had jury summons whilst a teacher?
Obviously I have had my leave of absence approved and I've just written unknown/approx 2 weeks for how long expected. However I have asked to meet the member of SLT to discuss expectations on cover work and whether this time will be paid by school or I have to claim as loss of earnings. It isn't very clear online or on the summons information. The business manager said I will be told in the meeting.
I handed in my notice to leave in August due to a few issues including the unapproachable and very critical SLT so I already feel things are frosty as it is; now I feel this is putting me even more out of favour and they'll try to make things as difficult as possible because of it. Though I could be overthinking things because of how things are.
Does anyone have any previous experience of jury service and rights whilst a teacher please?

Academy or LA? LA normally have policy to pay you during jury service but less sure for accademy schools.

I did jury service whilst working in a school, I was paid for the time I was out (a week) and we were working from cross department schemes of work so I just had to say where my classes were up to before I finished so whoever was coving knew where to pick up from, however in my current role (FE teacher) I would expect to have to write all of my own cover lessons. My head wasn’t over the moon about it, and tried to stop me from representing the school at a prestigious event on the basis of me having “too much time off” 🙄 as if I’d been sunning myself on a beach rather than being in court. I found it really interesting, particularly as I was a humanities/citizenship teacher at the time and I would be happy to do it again in the future, although I can appreciate that those involved in more harrowing cases might not feel the same.

Thank you both. LA school.
How funny, I am a humanities teacher! I'm also looking forward to doing it and it was quite clear I had to go when I read exclusions. I had my meeting with slt yesterday and it also felt they were not too happy either as if it was my fault or "if you're wanting to do it". I did say I will be saying when I start that I would find 2 weeks plus difficult in my job but will see what happens.
I've been told I have to now sort cover work for the estimated 2 weeks. It will take a while and so I've been advised to start now! Some of the plans will be shared across department. I felt a bit miffed about this but likewise, I don't want my colleagues having to bear the brunt.
Re. Pay: the policy says that jury service is unpaid but that I have to claim the loss of earnings from the court and then the school will make up the shortfall. It is going to then be a bit retrospective in some ways and sounds a right faff.

I deferred my summons the first time they summoned me. It was for the last 2 weeks of teaching before GCSE and A Level pupils left for study leave, so the timing was awful. They allowed me to defer and asked for dates I would be available.

Then they called me again for the last 2 weeks of the summer term, which was ok and my classes could actually be covered within my department (maths, so we're a large department and each teacher was only down to cover a couple of lessons). I was paid by school, because it was a pain to organise paying me differently for just 2 weeks. As it was, I was sent home by lunchtime of the first Monday and told to come back on Wednesday. Then sent home by lunchtime on the Wednesday and told to come back the following Monday. Then they rang to cancel the second week because so many defendants had changed their pleas to guilty and I wasn't needed. I was a bit annoyed that I'd written 2 weeks of cover work and was only out of school for 2 days and didn't even get into a court room.

Ive been advised by a colleague to take a book as they remember their time as a lot of sitting around waiting!
It is interesting that my schools policy is not to pay but to claim back. I can tell it is going to be difficult.
I really don't want to defer. I've got an abroad holiday booked 1st week of the summer holiday so also feeling nervous about the potential it overruns (but unlikely if I can say I cannot do over 2 weeks) then will be hopefully starting a new job come September.
I do understand how it will impact the school with me being out. It is tricky with cover. But no gcse classes or anything. It is so hard when time out and what to do is unknown!
