Smart ideas to improve work-life balance for KS2 teachers?

I like being a Year 5/6 teacher (in my 5th year of teaching and my second school) and I'm pretty good at it - probably not amazing but I do my best and am always looking to improve. My head and SLT are OK. However, I am working a 55-60 hour week. I thought that this would be early career short term but it's clearly not and it's not sustainable. It's come to a head this weekend when two family members have had scary medical results and it's dawned on me that all this work is eating up my life and I am not spending time with the people I love. So, I need to change what I do as a teacher and be smarter without being less conscientious. If you teach KS2 (esp. year 6) and have any hacks or strategies for getting your life back, I'd be really grateful if you'd share them so that I can get some balance. I like teaching and I want to stay but can't go on like this.

Might not be very helpful for you but I went to 4 days a week and it’s made so much difference. I love my job but was just so tired by Friday evening.

Thanks, but not an option for me - just couldn't afford it. Glad it works for you though.

Get the children to mark some of their own work. They can mark fluency work in maths, straightforward grammar in English etc.

Going part time was the only thing that cut my workload.

What you describe is pretty much the term time job I think. The benefit is you work like mad in term time but have 13 whole weeks a year when you aren’t - so it’s packing what you can into that.

Mark as you go in lessons. I never let children talk to me about thief work unless I have marking pens in hand. Scan, mark, move on. Keep doing this all lesson and have TA do the same. It’s actually much more effective for kids having instant feedback.

Have TA calculate answers in maths while you do the input. Can both circulate with answers or share with kids at end of lesson to self mark.

Self and peer assess once per week. This takes lesson time too so less planning.

Re-use old planning. Only fill in bare minimum on lesson plans.

Have TA copy and trim all worksheets.

Make sure kids are self-sufficient for 20 minutes at end of each day (playing class game or something) while you set up for next day.

Any incentives, things you’ve been asked to do, wait to be chased as they often don’t follow through. Any paper work been asked to do keep next to recycling bin and push in if been there more than half a term.

Take a few sick days when report time comes around. I always do this.

Plan cross curricular lessons to free up curriculum time so you’re not constantly frantically trying to get work done in class. Produce less, good quality work.

Do planning in the holidays. So worth it for me to sit in bed for a day and turn out all science & curriculum plans for the half term including ppts, worksheets etc. then PPA is only core subjects.

Be smart about displays. If you’re allowed to keep the same up all year, do that, just make it really good. If you have to change plan in drop down days or at least a few afternoons where everything gets done including mounting and putting up etc.

Don’t split hairs over assessments. Go with your gut and make it quick. Only end of year writing assessments need to be totally accurate in Y6.

Say no to boosters after school. It’s too much and you need to have time to plan good quality lessons and be present the next day.

Thank you - loads to think about here. I don't have a TA to speak of though unfortunately. I share one who takes out the individual literacy interventions through the morning and she takes out very small group maths afternoons across the school so she's never in class. It would be lovely to have another adult! But thank you, I will think about all of these.

Agree with the above apart from the sick days - that's putting a huge burden on everyone else at an already stressful
time of year. Do your reports in the May holiday like every other teacher, crap though that is.

Can you do one report a day for the next few weeks? How current do they need to be?

I'm secondary and ours don't take too long to write but I have approx 180 per year.

Totally agree with live marking and getting the kids to mark their own work more. Develop that skill for secondary school too.
