Is 90 minutes each way commute excessive for a placement?

As above.
My daughter in her last year of uni started placement a couple of weeks ago. It was only a couple of days before she started that she told us where it was. She doesn't drive and uses public transport which means over 90 minutes each way. We don't live in a rural area. Is 90 minutes normal. Her two previous placements were 30 and 40 minutes. The reason I ask is where we live has the same name as a a small town a few miles from her school. I asked her to make sure they knew where she lived but obviously it was too late for her to find another placement nearer to home. She is fiercely independent and I am always walking on landmines when talking to her about such things. It crossed my mind somebody may have seen the place name and didnt go by the post code. Too late now and she has another 8 weeks of 3hrs+ traveling each day.
Or is this normal and she was lucky in the first two placements?
Cheers

It’s a long commute but at her age for a few months it’s not going to kill her. You’re being a bit overprotective

Our rule is up to 1hr travelling each way for primary trainees, up to 2hrs for secondary trainees. Not that we think primary trainees should have an easier commute, but because we have more primary placements locally whereas, for some subjects in secondary, there just aren't suitable placements near at hand.

Is she able to do any work on her journey? Is it train or buses, and is she likely to have to stand or get a seat - possibly even with a table - for any/ all of her journey?

A friend's daughter did secondary Teach First in London and had a two hour commute each way on her final placement, but she was able to do ALL her work on the journeys so could relax once she was home.

It's not abnormal. If she can use the commute to mark etc, so much the better.

How far is it? Are there any other trainees she can car share with?

When I was a trainee, somebody I was in a school with lived over 25 miles away and didn't drive. She got a bus and a tube to me, then I drove to the school. It's not ideal but in some places it can be near impossible to find schools who are willing to take trainees.

It's quite standard in training years for a commute that long if someone doesn't drive.

I have known trainees with similar commutes unfortunately. It just depends on placement availability.

At the school I work in, once a trainee has started, either they or the mentor will send an email asking if anyone travels the same way and would be willing to give a lift -might be worth asking at her school.

Lucky with 1st two, my DD had to rent at her 2nd placement, it was a 4hr drive and even further by train/taxi.

She got back the rent & w/e transport costs.

Unfortunately it can be fairly standard. When my husband was training he stayed with a teacher from the school during the week for a bit of extra cash!

Ok thanks everyone. 😊

Mine were all over 2hrs away. When you sign up for teacher training you just have to suck it up for the short period of time. If she is there with another student who drives she could possibly ask them to car share?
