Pregnancy, teaching, covid and maternity leave advice please

I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant and recovering from covid which I caught at school. We've had a huge outbreak at school and my risk assessment didn't happen - I teach across several year groups in EYFS and KS2. Anyway, I've been really poorly all week with it and I'm definitely not well enough to return next week, I'm struggling with breathlessness, feeling dizzy and fatigue. I'm also very anxious about returning while covid levels are so high - currently 40% of staff off sick. I'm now wondering what my options are. Apparently I can self certify for 28 days and then get signed off sick. Would my maternity leave kick in at 36 weeks? My midwife has advised that I shouldn't have been in school from 28 weeks anyway but my head hasn't mentioned this and is expecting me back.

Advice needed please.

I am secondary and working from home ((I actually was allowed to start this from 27 weeks as I was so anxious after Christmas I couldnt go in, felt sick, heart palpitations etc) and it was offered to me a week early. That said- they hadnt confirmed id be allowed to wfh from 28 weeks until I received that offer by phone so it was a shock!

With regards to being signed off, if it is pregnancy related then your maternity leave will start 36 weeks. If you can get signed off without it mentioning your pregnancy, you should be able to argue it to not start early but theyll probably not want to pay you past that point!

Speak to your union as they will know what's happening with pregnant teachers in their region (the regional people not the school rep, though you can ask the school rep to start with)

Definitely get your union involved

I was put on wfh from 29weeks. HR arranged for an occupational health assessment.
