Training as an Ed Psychologist

Has anyone left teaching to retrain? I've been teaching for 15 years and I want to do something new.
Will I need a psychology degree?

Yes you need a psychology degree. The training course is really competitive to get onto despite the lack of EPs because the government don’t fund enough places for trainees to replace the number of EPs leaving to go into private practice. You get a training grant which is about £22k a year (may be a little more in the second and third years when you are employed by an LA).

@saltandpepper234 I can’t see me managing it with work so It’s impossible. Thank you though.

It’s not going to happen because I’ll need to work. I might look at something else.
Thanks.

Yes unfortunately the only option is a full time commitment. In the second and third years especially you are employed by an LA as a trainee Ed psych and you essentially do the job supervised whilst having a day study release.

If you are a teacher and want to do something similar why don’t you have a look at other LA positions eg. Specialist Teachers, Statutory Assessment Service. You wouldn’t have to retrain necessarily. The exception would be if you went for a visual/hearing or PNI impairment specialist teaching job but even then you can usually start doing the role while the LA pay for you to get your qualification.
