Moving House & Teaching Job

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience of moving house (with mortgage etc) and jobs at the same time?

We are looking to relocate and move during the summer holidays. We’ve been advised to put house up for sale and start looking for our new home in January, but jobs starting September won’t be coming available until March-ish. The mortgage company won’t give us an AIP without me having secured a job, which could take us to end of May.

I just can not get the timescales right in my head!! Anyone attempted this before?! 😰

I think, if you are hoping to get a new job in a new area, you will have to accept that you will probably have to sell and rent for a while. Or do it the other way and apply for your new job from where you are, sign the contract and then put your house on the market and expect a lot of stress in the Autumn Term selling whilst living in a new area and settling into a new school.

I've done it before, in a slightly different time-frame, but I wouldn't recommend it - far too stressful an experience.

A few years ago, I interviewed in May for a job with a January start, which I got. The school was too far for me to commute to on a daily basis so I put my house on the market at the beginning of the summer holiday that year. Possibly the worst time to do it, because people don't tend to go house-hunting during the summer holiday (back when holidays were a thing, pre-Covid). A slow market meant that I didn't get an offer on my house until late October. This meant that the last bit of the autumn term, before I started at my new school, was a mad dash to find a new property close to my new school. I managed to do it but it was a very, very stressful time, not helped by complications with securing a new mortgage deal.

I would agree with Kite22 - if I had to do it again, I would sell and rent for a while. The other regret I have about doing what I did is that I ended up rushing my search for a new property and living in an area I hadn't researched thoroughly enough beforehand.

Thankfully, we’re moving back to the area we grew up and still have family there, so we know exactly where we want to buy etc. Maybe we will think about renting first.

Seems so complicated!

That is exactly what I did! We decided to move at Christmas, interviewed for jobs in the new area in January (and got them) for a September start. Put the house on the market. Moved into rental in new area in the summer holiday and completed on the 'old' house in September or October- so was paying rent and mortgage for a couple of months!

I would advise going into rented in the new area short term, it puts you in a much better position when you do see something to buy
