I'm new to teaching in Reception class

And I hate it. I was doing PPA cover across the school, wanted to go back into the classroom as a jobshare and this was the only thing available. I didn't have to take it but thought I'd give it a go.

Of course I'm trying to be all positive and breezy about it in real life but I'm literally counting down the weeks until the end of the academic year when I can hopefully switch back to KS2. It doesn't help that I'm ill (post-covid) and so not even really able to adopt the sing-songy reception teacher persona (as I can barely talk properly, let alone sing!)...

Any advice for how to get through the next 2.5 terms intact? Anyone else experienced similar?

Do you have a fab TA ?
Talk to them. Tell them you have been hit a bit sideways by the completely different approach that is teaching Reception.
Tell them you would be very happy to receive tips or advice. Ask them what they have seen work well. Ask them how to be better.

TAs are generally brilliant, but, if not, then do you have a year group partner? Head of Year or Head of Early Years ? Or a Nursery teacher? One of the positives about Early Years is that you generally work in a Team. It is massively different from KS2, so ask for help.

Thank you for replying. My TA is indeed fabulous and has been supporting with some of the carpet times when my voice has failed me completely. The yeargroup lead-teacher has also been incredibly supportive. I feel very well-advised and supported, it's just not a nice feeling to transition from feeling completely competent in my old role to feeling like I'm flailing around needing help from everyone! I think the illness has been a big factor to be honest - it hasn't been the easiest start! And I'm probably quite self-conscious of how I'm coming across as we have a new head and I'm trying to be making a good impression but afraid she's definitely not seeing me at my best!

My first job out of college was reception class. I was totally winging it and hoping no one realised how clueless l was. I hated it at first and actually thought teaching wasn't for me. Then some time during that year it began to click. I got into a routine and started to love it. Spent 5 years there and did it again off and on throughout my career. Hang in there as it doesn't all come straight away.

Thank you, that's reassuring! On a positive note, last week I felt like I was enjoying myself a bit. There is hope!!!
