Any careers advisors here?

I am a teaching assistant in a secondary school at the moment. An internal vacancy has come up for the role of careers advisor. The school are offering it as a level 6 apprenticeship and I meet the entry requirements. I am very interested but also very scared of trying something new. I have spoken to the school and have some idea of what the role entails. I guess I'm asking if anyone here has experience of working as a career advisor and if you would recommend it? Am I trying to bite off more than I can chew?

Do you have an understanding of the skills and classes and degree programmes, as well as experience,.needed to be a: doctor, lawyer, engineer, consultant, banker, 3d designer, architect, veterinarian, programmer, UX designer, etc... Do you know what careers and skills are relevant to kids today? Do you understand the changing landscape of careers and how we are moving away from a world that needs rote tasks and to a world fuelled by automation? Do you know what skills this new future will value? (Note, business industry leaders publish white papers on the future of work and necessary job skills every year). Are you interested in these things and will you be able motivate yourself to learn about them and all the other new career avenues that open up as the world of work evolves? Is this something you're interested in? Are you interested in knowing what unis are best for each subject? Are you aware of the sort of apprenticeships available today? From trades to accountancies and marketing, design, consultancy, etc?

The qualification is quite weighty, so think about whether it’s a good fit academically (the career theory unit nearly finished me off and I’ve been to uni twice before!). Find out how much time you’ll get to do the academic work.

Otherwise careers done well is a BIG job, covering a lot more than you’d expect. You’ll need to do strategy, Gatsby…it’s a lot more than just meeting with kids.
