Where are the teaching vacancies?

I'm considering moving house - either to York or Cambridge. What is the likelihood of finding work in either of those cities or outskirts of?

I teach KS1 part-time at the moment, which is what I'd most like to do in new area although have also done PPA cover and (back in ye olden days when there was money available) EAL teaching.

Hi, I can comment on York. It is extremely difficult to get a job! Slightly more chance if you look towards Selby, Leeds or Hull. I spent 2 years on supply before securing a job. Even then, I had a KS1 preference but ended up teaching UKS2! At the minute there is a lot of supply work available in the York area if you would consider that?
York to Selby can be done in 30minutes when there is little traffic. Getting across York can take over an hour when the traffic is bad. Commuting time is definitely something to consider as a 30 minute journey doesn't seem bad but that can easily be doubled.
Definitely worth doing some more research and considering other areas too.

Yikes. Thanks. That's helpful!

Yeah, York’s not great for vacancies, especially primary. Totally agree with the awful commute traffic. House prices are insane, fuelled more recently by people moving up here from the south after covid makes home working easier. It’s not the city it was.

As an ex Cambridge HT, go there. You will be snapped up within seconds!!!
However, it's expensive to live and there's no London weighting.

Bury St Edmunds (near-ish Cambridge) always seemed to struggle to fill teaching vacancies when I was there, and it’s a lovely place to live.

Thanks for your insights. I wonder what it is about york? I did my training there yonks ago and there were no jobs in primary then. Does everyone just stay forever?

There’s a long commute to other places, people move from down south because ‘it’s so lovely’ with a large amount of house sale capital so don’t need to move on for promoted/better paid posts, it’s not a large city so there’s not a large number of densely packed schools to choose from (my DCs school catchment encompasses about 40 primary feeder schools).

Meant to say - 40 primary feeder schools from a huge area that reaches into East and North Yorks
