No teaching jobs

I graduated with my PGCE QTS (primary) in 2020 and I still haven’t found a teaching job. IlI’ve been on supply since I graduated. I’m currently on long term supply at a school, but not as a teacher. I’ve applied to so many primary teaching jobs in Greater Manchester (the towns I can get to). I’ve had a few interviews. They tell me that I interviewed well and planned an engaging lesson… but I always “just missed out.” Always goes to someone “with more experience.”

I am tired of working on supply and only being paid for term time. I really want to complete my NQT/ECT!

I’ve applied for non-education jobs, but I feel like they think I’m over qualified! I have a BA Hons English so I’m starting to wish that I had trained in a secondary school… but I don’t really want to teach teenagers.

Not sure what I’m asking, but I just want to rant.

Just to add… there are barely any vacancies. I check on the LA website everyday.

Are you searching on TES? Have you considered moving for a job? Have you thought about independent schools?

HolyShort · 01/10/2021 14:25

I'm amazed by this, when I trained 10 years ago all the schools wanted cheap trainees and people missed out if they were experienced!

You say you are on long term supply but not teaching? I'm not sure how that works but if you have only just qualified and are already in a non teaching role that probably isn't doing your CV any favours.

This isn't the best time to find a job, especially with covid, but there is definitely more movement happening now in schools. I think the job market will improve but it might take until Easter when all the flurry of jobs are released.

Wherearetheteachingjobs · 01/10/2021 16:34

@EllieNBeeb yes I check TES too. I can’t afford to move to another area.
@HolyShort no, they want experienced teachers now. Probably someone in the middle of the pay scale.

Move East Cying out for teachers in Anglia, and most adverts specify nqt as there is fuck all money! Experienced teachers are screwed but newly qualifieds are wanted all over rural cambs, norfolk.

LongAndDarkDecember · 01/10/2021 16:55

This may be a response that offends some (sorry) but personally I’d be trying really hard to avoid getting stuck on the supply hamster wheel.

I would look into moving. The NW has always been saturated with NQTS.

Scarby9 · 01/10/2021 16:55

@HolyShort
NQTs are no longer a cheap option.
The new two year Early Career Framework Framework entitles an NQT (or ECT, as they are now called) to the 10% timetable reduction in their first year, then 5% in their second AND weekly support and observations from a school mentor, following a curriculum. It is good stuff, but it is a financial and time commitment for a school.

Wherearetheteachingjobs · 01/10/2021 17:08

@Scarby9 exactly!
@LongAndDarkDecember I hate supply! I wish I’d known there wasn’t a demand for teachers in the NW.

Around here (Derbyshire/Notts), some of the MATs hold their own recruitment days. I presume you have little say on exactly where you're sent and personally I think most academies have been a disaster for primary education, but it might be a way to get a foot in the door and then when you've more experience you could move to an LA school.

phlebasconsidered · 02/10/2021 04:27

Our ect time off timetable is covered by TAs. They still work out much cheaper than teachers on m6 or above. Over the past 3 years in my school every single post has been to an nqt. It is rare to see a post advertised without it being obvious only new teachers need apply. Unless it's a maternity cover!

A good independent can either provide you with a loan for the move or in the case of a boarding school, even the opportunity for housing. Most my friends moved to London after finishing uni, you can't really expect to find the job you want after finishing school without making a move.

Would love an update on this - I'm a teacher and recently relocated but found it completely the other way round when I was looking for a role - it seemed that schools preferred to hire ECT's rather than teachers with experience, probably due to pay. However, I'm in a different part of the UK.

How did you get on? Hope you found the right role! :)
