I have a question about NQT’s

Is it common some staff act like they’re a bit better than NQT’s?

Better, how?

I mean, it’s normal for some people in any job to be twats so you might have met one of them, but tbh, it’s also likely that experienced staff are ‘better’ at some things than NQTs.

What happened?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 07/09/2021 21:10

Yes, I wrote an answer earlier where I basically said that teaching staff are probably better teachers than NQTs, office staff sometimes think they are better/more important in the school than the Head, and that it sounds like the staff in question are probably dicks.

Internetperson1 · 07/09/2021 21:12

Yeah Of Course. I know there’s things they’d be better at that comes with the territory of them being way more experienced.

But I just felt like a school kid after it or like I was getting told off for a mistake even I know was non detrimental. Idk if that particular person was just being a nause over it though.

I think it was just the latter. On such early days I feel you just have to be fair as I don’t know everything to a “t” at the moment.

Internetperson1 · 07/09/2021 21:34

100% they’re better than me but when someone’s making you feel like a school kid for something you weren’t aware of you feel a bit sad. I was actually nearly tearing up because I was feeling so excited and then I was like “oh”

OP posts:
MrsHamlet · 07/09/2021 21:46

Some people are twats.

Internetperson1 · 07/09/2021 21:51

I can honestly say I wanted to have a cry MrsHamlet. It’s just I wish people would be kind and not make you feel like “hey you’re doing a shit job there how dare you make an error”

Even the way he said it was like undertones of “ugh what a stupid nqt”

OP posts:
MrsHamlet · 07/09/2021 22:06

I mean, I hope I am better than an NQT, given how long I've been doing it... but I also hope I'm not a twat about it!
I'm afraid to say that kindness is not always a thing. It gets forgotten in the pressure cooker environment.
Chalk it up to experience and remember that tomorrow is a new day.

Internetperson1 · 07/09/2021 22:10

You’re undeniably better than me ofc with a wealth of really amazing experience! All I want to do is just be myself but after today I’m like oh gosh. I even sat down looking like I was on the verge of tears but I just made sure to look past it.

It’s just not easy when you know you have to be around the person as they’re literally in your dept! I’ll keep a wide birth maybe and just be as nice as I can and cry after haha I’m a sensitive sally i guess

What heinous crime did you commit?

AttaGirrrrl · 08/09/2021 07:52

What actually happened?

Internetperson1 · 08/09/2021 16:56

I have the wrong colour sticker😭

😂😂😂😂😂

GoldGazelle · 08/09/2021 18:36

Sounds like where I used to work.

Remember people treating you that way are no doubt insecure, threatened you may one day be better than them or shift up the ranks and trying to assert their authority to make themselves feel better.

Inevitably in any job there is power play and trainees or new staff have less experience so need help. But it shouldn't be unkind or done in a way to make you feel useless. It should be friendly, empowering and kind.

Ride out the year and look for a school with a better culture.

AttaGirrrrl · 08/09/2021 19:59

Oh gawwwwd. And someone was so bothered by that they belittled you? Tch. Ignore. Move on.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 08/09/2021 20:46

Yeah that person's just a twat. Try to rise above.

LolaSmiles · 08/09/2021 21:46

That's not an experienced teacher thing, or an NQT thing, it's an unpleasant arsehole thing.

Their reaction over a sticker mistake says a lot more about them than it does an NQT who is new and has made a mistake.

Internetperson1 · 08/09/2021 23:12

Yeah exactly and I mean I just think some people like to act like they’re way better than you at everything. Or get pleasure out of seeing you completely confused. A sticker though it’s so minor it’s unreal. It’s not like I let a kid stomp on desks

OP posts:
Internetperson1 · 08/09/2021 23:13

Agreed. I think going forward I’m just going to do what I have to and call it. I just feel like I really wanted them to have been a bit kinder over it. I don’t mind being told I’m wrong at all because it’s a learning curve but I really hate being belittled about it.

OP posts:
Internetperson1 · 08/09/2021 23:15

It’s crazy isn’t it mrshamlet. A sticker. Maybe next time I’ll get in trouble for giving out the right stickers in the wrong way

OP posts:
Internetperson1 · 08/09/2021 23:17

Yeah attagirl I just like to kill em with kindness. I can hate someone deep down but I know that person will go home and realise what an ass they’re being when I’m just kind back.

But I feel like if it gets to a point where I’m being picked up abouy minor issues I’d probably just mention it in passing.

OP posts:
Internetperson1 · 08/09/2021 23:20

Oh yeah also goldgazelle as an nqt I know they’re thinking another clueless newbie here. The goal is to move up in seniority not because I need a power trip but because I shadowed a family friend once who talked about her experience moving up and I found it pretty inspirational. But all with time better get my stickers sorted for now hey then dream about progression some other year😂

OP posts:
MissCruellaDeVil · 08/09/2021 23:49

I can definitely say I've experienced a bit of hostility from a more senior member of staff! Most are completely fine though and so far SLT seem supportive.

MrsHamlet · 09/09/2021 06:57

Give it a few years before thinking about moving up!

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 09/09/2021 19:05

The goal is to move up in seniority

You might hate teaching by Xmas. I don't understand people who become teachers to just become management. Do the job first.
