What happens to kids in your class who have fewer opportunities at home?

DS is moving up to secondary school in September. He has a transition project to complete with various tasks to document over the summer holidays.

I was thinking that it's going to be pretty obvious to the teachers which children were able to go to the beach, a castle etc. and which ones don't have that kind of opportunity. Is that part of the point, to find out about kids' backgrounds as soon as possible? What happens then? Do DC with fewer opportunities get special support, or do you keep a closer eye on them?

It's probably more so that they don't forget how to use a pen over the holidays. I doubt anyone would be judging whether they went to the beach particularly given covid.

Extra opportunities may be given to kids on Pupil Premium, you can find out what the school spends its pupil premium money on as it should be published on the school website.
