Autism

Hi all, I have got an interview at a school for secondary-age students with learning difficulties and disabilities (of which autism is one, as you might expect!)
I have to do a lesson for 20 mins on a subject of my choice, with 2 students (Yrs 9&11) who are working at E3 level.
Any thoughts, advice, recommendations, do's and don't's etc...?!
Thanks!

Do play to your strengths and pick a subject you are confident with.
Do make sure you've read up on what's expected at that level if you've never worked in SEN before.
Do have a plan in the back of your head of how you support/scaffold at each point in case students don't understand.

Don't overcomplicate your lesson. Doing something simple and responding to their needs is much better than trying to do something complex.

Good luck!

Excellent advice, which makes a great deal of sense! Thank you very much for responding! :-)

Make everything as visual as possible. Very clear and simple instructions. Allow time for processing. Allow time for questions (I'm sure they will have lots). I work in a school for autistic boys and have an autistic child myself and it can be hard to strike a balance between answering their questions and moving forward with the lesson!

In my experience they can work very slowly so be flexible if you don't get through everything in your lesson plan. Good luck!
