I’m hoping for some advice here. I’ve started at a new school. Got my job around early April time and visited a few times here and there since but as I was also on my placement I couldn’t go too often but when I Met the dept they said that there was a few things that needed to be sorted in terms of my things for September.

So I said I’ll do whatever I can to support with that. I was meaning to send an email my mentour but I’d been away with my family and just enjoying my break generally. He sent me a email a few nights ago saying “hello please advise when you can come in during the holidays to arrange things in preparation for September”

Then a few days ago he sent me another email saying “ just a heads up - the doors are going to be completely locked for the next week the school are therefore going to be having more security around (I think it’s refurbishment) and if we go in we have to request a special pass to enter the building. We should do this as we really need to sort out a few things ready for September” I said “yes not a problem I’ll see you then but i can also come in on Friday this week to sort anything out if that would be helpful”.

He then said “great. We need to get some bits sorted for sept asap if Im honest. The ordering of the books won’t take much time but resource booklets and policy checking are going to take the majority of the day get sorted and from what I remember there are lots of boxes that also need sorting as they’re not organised at all. I also recall from when I checked after my meeting that the places and lab your teaching in are not looking great and that’s going to take some work. see you on Friday morning”

Have I done anything wrong? I fely he might be a bit angry at me maybe that I’ve not been proactive or something in the holidays? What do you guys think?

Sorry I seem like I’m over thinking I just wanted to make a good impression on him and the new dept generally as I do really care.

Hello Lolasmiles I’m all set with a time and place now with my mentor. He’s super helpful and I’m very organised so that’s why I really didn’t want to seem like I was slacking by not sending out the email to ask when I should be doing A,B, C

I’d just been trying to see some family and my nanna who had just come out of isolation then ended up feeling no so great myself!!

That's a good outcome. 👍

He sounds proactive and like he is trying to help you - and give you a head's up that there is quite a bit to do.
You want to make your life easier for September so getting it sorted now is ideal.
I had the opposite - a mentor who barely replied, told me not to even think about and after me chasing agreed to let me in the building for a morning. Then September came and they overloaded me.

I wouldn't say his emails are cross. I think he is just efficient and you need to now be proactive with dates, times and get in as much as possible next week. You might then find it is all sorted in two days and you can enjoy the rest of the summer.

How are things going since you started?
