Teaching in Sheffield/Nottingham

I live in the South East and recruitment is awful this year, I just finished my PGCE (primary) and was told by uni that it's the worst recruitment year they've seen for decades.

I know it varies in different areas. My partner and I have been planning on moving to Sheffield/Nottingham area but weren't going to do it for a few years. But I wonder if it would be worth moving sooner if there are more jobs up there? Not this time of year of course but generally.

Is anyone here from this area, can you tell me what it's like?

Also thinking that as I've signed up to supply for next year it'll be easier logistically to visit schools and apply for jobs far away than it would be if I had a full time class teacher job down here, so maybe best to do the move while I'm on supply

I’m in Notts, there’s definitely jobs. We haven’t had many applicants for our NQT job this year but we are on a deprived area so it depends how open to this you are. There are a few Academy chains that will do recruitment drives, and supply agencies for fixed term contracts which could be an option if you don’t secure a permanent position.

I've worked in Derbyshire and Notts and there's always been plenty of jobs.

Lots of lovely little village schools too in the Peaks if you head Sheffield/Chesterfield way.

I'm not sure about primary jobs (I teach secondary) but the cost of living in Sheffield is much, much lower than in the south-east so you'd find supply pay would stretch much further even if you couldn't find full-time hours... Sheffield is also a wonderful place to live Smile

Thanks all, @JaggedLittlePilI Chesterfield is actually where I've been looking as it looks lovely.

I didn't consider how supply pay would stretch further, good point!

It’s interesting it’s such a bad year for recruitment. Wonder if it’s just all the uncertainty?

I’m going to take a difference stance actually. I think if you’re struggling to get a teaching post in the SE then that’s probably where the majority of shortages are.

salviapages · 12/08/2021 21:29

@Babymeanswashing shortage of teachers, or shortage of jobs? Most teaching positions this year in my area had 80-100+ applicants for each job. Either a shortage of jobs or an excess of teachers, surely?
