Not being paid for August?!!

I wonder if anyone can help with this... my husband works in a school as an LSA and will be leaving next week to start a new job in September. The school have told him that he won't get paid for August as he started the job in March (2019) and pay is pro-rata. Does this sound right?
My husband is also on his second week of paternity leave at the moment and the school have said they will pay this second week at full pay, not half, as a sort of gesture for him not being paid in August.
Any thoughts?
Not great timing, as I'm a teacher but not currently in a school (took a year out to have our baby) and so not entitled to SMP, just MA. I've been privately tutoring this year but obviously can't at the moment with a newborn. We're also meant to be moving in August. Confused

Your DH needs to look at his contract, it will have a notice period on it. Often it’s 4 or 6 weeks. If it was 4 weeks he shouldn’t have given notice until 1st of August to be paid August. Sounds like he jumped the gun without reading his contract.

Agree, TAs going to a new job in September would usually just resign at the beginning of August.

Resign 31st July and state last day of employment as 31st August. Office staff and payroll often don't see the importance of making this clear. He will then get the correct NI and pension contributions and, if relevant, a continuous employment record if new job is with the current LA.
