Key Stage 2 comprehension exercises

Finding reading comprehension passages seems to take up a lot of my time and I can only seem to find a couple of relevant passages for each topic. I then need to come up with some questions and answers based on the text and so overall it's quite a lengthy process.

I was wondering how you go about this process. Where do you find the texts and do you come with your own questions and answers?

Look for Ashley Booth Reading Spine online. Free, 3 lessons per week for each year group, each week based on a theme. It's working well for us. Lots of texts are online - some song lyrics, free samples of texts, sometimes based on video clips...all sorts.

Vocabulary Ninja stuff is good too, for teaching them skills to use to answer reading comprehension.

Literacy Shed plus (subscription) and we also use ReadTheory occasionally but not too keen on that.

Thanks a lot - that's very useful!

Do you just get given a general topic like 'vikings' and then go and find relevant texts/video clips + come up with questions and answers?

We are sometimes given specific questions to guide our lessons and so the passages need to be a bit niche!

Thanks again for the help :)

We have a Literacy Shed plus subscription too. It includes a weekly newspaper with comprehension questions too and is really useful.
Has an area for topics too, and great to change things with some comprehension questions on animations too.
Also supplement with Comprehension Ninja (bought book from Amazon) and the occasional Twinkl.

The vast majority of our English is taught through a shared text so I make a lot of use of that. I create my own questions and tasks using VIPERS as a framework to hang them on and mark answers as if I was using a SATs mark scheme (but I'm Y6 so have to in order to get them used to it).

I supplement this with "one-off" extracts connected to our History, Geography, Science, current events, etc. so that the kids get a range of texts. Also sometimes use song lyrics and analyse as if they were poetry.

Every so often, I do a session on vocabulary only through the use of chosen Vocabulary Ninja words that could be effectively used in their current areas of study or their current/next piece of writing.
