If I took a part time role on how long will it take me to finish my ECT years?

So I know the NQT/ECT period is now 2 years but I was looking at a job that starts in November and it’s 4 days per week full time. How much longer would I need to complete that training if I took the job? I’m not good at maths at all so I figured I would ask

I would presume you’d be doing 80% of a timetable, so would need an extra 20% of time afterwards? Another term-ish at 4 days per week? Although that guidance says “n cases where part-time ECTs have completed a period covering but not equivalent to two full school years and can demonstrate that they meet the Teachers’ Standards they may be able to have their induction period reduced (see para 3.5 on reductions).”

I wonder if the school would consider employing you for the extra day as a cover supervisor or similar? That might push you up to complete ECT in two years?

Cover supervision won't count towards it. And most ABs won't reduce the number of days.
I had an NQT take 3 years and a term. She was about 8 days short but they let her off with that :)

@MrsHamlet ah right okay then. I might just a pass the opportunity then as I feel I would like to complete my ECT within the two years. That’s just a personal preference as I’ll be nearing my 30’s and I want to feel I’ve accomplished something before then. It sounds stupid but that’s just me

Surely a job which counts is better than no job though?

Ritakk · 27/06/2021 21:37

@MrsHamlet I know but it’s just personal preference. Each to their own I suppose.

Why would taking an extra term on your ECT mean you've not accomplished something?

If you've not got a post for September you could easily end up not doing work counting for your induction for autumn 2021, in which case having a job but doing an extra term induction is the same, with the added benefit of having a job.

A job is definitely better than no job. I’d at least ask whether it is possible to get a full time role (full time NQT would be cheaper than part time UPS3) so they might consider it.

@AttaGirrrrl ah right okay I’ll ask this
