Whose news to share?

I have resigned from a job that has been quite unpleasant for the past two years. I told three close colleagues and the Head before half term. Yesterday morning, another colleague congratulated me on my new post. I asked how she knew but she didn't say. I thought that the news was in the staff room arena so told more colleagues yesterday that I'm leaving. Today I have received a message from the Head telling me that three colleagues have been to see her about my departure in the last two days. This news should be shared with every staff member at the same time, apparently! Am I in the wrong for having shared my news with a few colleagues? I'm really not into drama and didn't want the big announcement in a staff meeting. I'm not sure how to respond to the Head's email.

Just ignore it. Smile and be pleasant then get f out of there and never look back!

If you have handed in your resignation it is up to you who you tell..

She might not like it - but that is how it is!

I'm counting down the days. I wasn't sure if there was a protocol about resigning and telling people, but I'm glad to hear that my resignation is my business to share with whom I want.

I have a feeling my life is going to be very difficult until the end of term - she wrote to me in half term to tell me I have to pay 50% of the fees back for a course I finished earlier this year. And on top of her email this morning about my resignation and "appropriate sharing of information" she's sent an email this evening refusing to allow me to do a short webinar course - 1.5 hours for a whopping £7.50 - but said if I've already bought the ticket I must make arrangements to make up the time at my earliest convenience 😡

This absolutely confirms I've made the right decision to leave 😢

My god she sounds absolutely vile! How on earth have you lasted that long?
I hope you’re involving your union every step of the way.

It's been a rough ride for the last few years. I got rock bottom a few times but have had to bounce back and carry on. I just couldn't do it any more, my family and my mental health have suffered too much.

I am in touch with a local union lady after a pay dispute last year so she is aware. I'm also considering taking this to the Chair of Governors who is very supportive of me if the Head continues like this. I've been told to focus on the handover between now and July. It would be helpful to know who I'm meant to be handing over to 😂

It’s your news to share however typically a communication plan is agreed.

Regarding the course, again typically agreements ‘in case of leaving’ are made. It’s not unreasonable to charge you, however to do on notice, without setting expectations is not ideal.

My advice? Ensure the best handover of your role. Leave all ‘beyond scrutiny’. I’ve been there when I left my last role and although it was tough with certain behaviours, I retained my professionalism and professional integrity. Colleagues saw this. If you raise anything, do the decent thing and raise with the person concerned and at the time concerned. If not it looks bitter, resentful and vengeful. The Chair should not be so unprofessional as to give view to you on headteacher/ loyalty.
