Interview feedback

Hi, I just want to share some feedback I had following an interview. They said I came across well, some of my answers were not as in depth as the more experienced candidate who got the job. Then they talked about my accent, phraseology and articulation which has really got to me. I keep repeating over in my head what she said about my accent and can’t help feel that this is a personal thing.

What did they actually say about your accent and phrasing?

Lillygarden55 · 31/05/2021 19:58

Well say I was from Liverpool for example, they said I was to “Liverpudlian” and I said phrases connected to that area. I thought it was very strange feedback to be honest.

What kind of school was it? Sounds like very picky feedback.

Lillygarden55 · 31/05/2021 21:03

@blackbettybramblejam
It was a primary school.

Is it a dialect that uses standard English?
I've met teachers from parts of north Manchester/ Lancashire that have a dialect that would say, 'she were...' instead of 'she was...'
When this is unfamiliar and you are used to teaching standard English, I think this can be a disadvantage. Unfairly!

Is your accent from the same country as the school you applied to? If they were critical of an Irish accent in England, or a Scottish accent in Wales that would be a bigger deal than a Liverpudlian one in Dorset. Though still pretty shit IMO.

I'm with @wonderpants on this.
In an interview, which is a formal context, and in the classroom, where we need to be introducing the children to Standard English, I would expect a candidate to speak Standard English. Unless impenetrable, the accent in which you speak that Standard English should not matter at all, but if you were using non-standard dialect forms, then I would mention it in feedback.
