Am I eligible for teacher training?

I am well on my way to beginning my teacher training in September having worked in schools for over 10 years. Unfortunately, while gathering together my paperwork, including GCSE certificates, I’ve realised I have made an error. I always thought I had a grade C English GCSE but I don’t, my English results are listed as follows:
English D #

  • speaking and listening C English literature B

Does this mean I do not qualify for teacher training? I have all other necessary qualifications and experience but I know an English GCSE is essential.

I’d be grateful for any advice.

Just in case you’re wondering, the hashtag next to the D means that I didn’t actually take the exam - I was in hospital at the time so was graded only on coursework. I am actually very good at English, and was predicted a much higher grade.

Some teacher training providers accept equivalencies of GCSEs, is this something that is an option for you to take?

Scarby9 · 14/05/2021 00:26

Tell the provider immediately. We would probably still take you (while being irritated behind your back), but you would need to pass an equivalency test.
One of our ITT PGCE trainees had to do this last year in Science. He had to pass it by a date in the October or would have to leave the course. It was so stressful for all of us, hence the irritation! We have vowed not to accept anyone onto our course without the full set of qualifications secure before they start the course, so you do need to get started on booking an equivalency test, if your provider is okay with that.

Thank you, I did email the provider last night and she has already replied with a link to the website where I can book an equivalency test. I am going to do that immediately so I will have my result well before the course begins. Thank you again for the advice.

You got a b in English lit they can count that surely.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 14/05/2021 20:18

Unfortunately not @monkeysox, it has to be English language, it’s a government requirement.
