Mentioning job applications to other staff? Is it a bad idea

So I've started the job app process. Obviously I told my mentor and HOD as that's the process here. But only thing was earlier today another staff member said as I was walking out my lesson "how was the lesson" j said "all fine just the odd few messing around as usual" she then said "ah okay. So anyway have you started the application process now for jobs" I said yes. And she said "what about here?" Ans I stupidly said "I think it's just the behaviour. Maybe I'm not a tough cookie like you all"

Did I put my foot in it a bit there with that? I mean all the staff know it's an issue since covid but it's just gotten more of a problem lately and staff say it all the time. Im wondering if I messed up?

I'm not quite sure what you are asking

Telling people you are applying is fine - I tend not to tell lots of people - as I think it is a bit unsettling of other staff.. but it is your choice

It could be depressing if you go for a few jobs and don't get any tho .. everyone knowing your business!

I think your comment implies you would not want to work at your current school - which i'm not sure people would really want to hear either

Do you work there now - or are you training there?

Training there, I find the behaviour tough though. And it's just hard to say I'm not applying when I have to ask the hod in front of the whole dept if i can get time to go to interviews. Do you think I sound like a bad person

To add onto this I also have to ask when it comes to refs!

I don't think you are bad - if you are training its a slightly different place - can you not email your HOD?

EllieNBeeb · 12/05/2021 22:48

I think you need to think a bit on discretion and what you should and shouldn't say. Bad-mouthing your current workplace is always a bad idea, particularly when you want a reference, and it shows a lack of maturity. If you do feel the need to explain, 'im not sure it's a good commute' or 'the right fit' are now appropriate. Implying you cannot handle challenging pupil behaviour sure isn't going to win you much of a reference either. It has nothing to do with 'if you're a good person'.

It's too late now I've said it and I can't change it. It's tough and yeah I made the mistake and wish I didn't say it it just stupidly slipped out my mouth

At no point was I trying to say I hate it. Just being called a "shi*head" by year 8s can sometimes make you feel a bit worthless

It’s nice to see you’ve found a school that you’re drawn to and want to apply to OP

TheJackieWeaver · 13/05/2021 17:48

Good luck with the application.

It’s totally normal for a trainee to be applying for jobs and totally normal for colleagues to ask you about it.

Presumably there aren’t jobs at your current school and/or your HOD won’t be surprised you’re not applying.

You don’t need to overthink this. Just concentrate on succeeding in your placement (what strategies are you trying to tackle the behaviour) and then move forward to the new school.
