Interview lesson

Hi all!

I have a primary school interview next week - currently a secondary teacher.

The focus of my lesson is English to mixed ability year 3. 30 minutes long.

Can anyone offer any captivating ideas? I’m thinking either prediction or inference but not sure if a writing task lends itself to the short amount of time I have.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Someone qualified and knowledgeable will be along shortly but is it guided reading or English task? I looked at character recently and groups shared their ideas and wrote descriptions around the character.

Interview letter just says ‘English’

Thank you :)

You could pick a grammar lesson on speech using SCAPS - speech marks, capital letter, actual words spoken, punctuation and then speech marks.

Start with a video clip - maybe with characters that don't say anything and get them to act in pairs (at desks atm obvs) what they might have said to each other. And write some ideas on a mini white board so they have some ideas.
Then model the skill and ask them to have a go on the white board so you can see who is doing well and who needs more guidance.
Once they're ready they can try to write their conversation between the characters

For high fliers get them to think carefully about their said word - boomed, roared, moaned ect

For real lowers give them pictures and speech bubbles and get them to write the conversation between the characters.
Then give them the sentence with speech marks chopped up to put in the correct order.

My class could probably do that in 30 mins but it'd have to be pacey

Only one Ideo from many of course!

Alternatively, if you prefer reading, a prediction lesson might be really good.

You can read them a small paragraph and then with their help, draw some pictures to story map what they've read. Then they can repeat it orally in pairs. After show them how to make a prediction based on what you already know. I like to make silly predictions first like "a glittering pig will top a Christmas tree" to make them laugh and explain why that would be wrong.

Then once they've discussed their prediction, you can get them to add their own pictures to complete the model you did with them.

I'm getting carried away. I love lower KS2 English...

Could you do inference and prediction using an engaging book cover from a book you would choose to work from? You could use discussion to draw out some key vocabulary and then challenge them to give the book a title or decide in groups/pairs what the story might be to share with the class. It might be a good way to start a book together and you could talk about what you would do next if they were your class and explain why you think the book is captivating for the age group etc

Good luck! How brilliant of you to get an interview! 😊🥳

What Raven said !! Great idea.

Ravenclawlass · 06/04/2021 22:20

Yes, like @devoncreamtea says, congratulations.
Like they say, if doing reading definitely take whatever you use from a book you think is captivating.

Next half term my class are using how to train your dragon because we're studying Vikings in history!

You'll do great, whatever you decide to do!

I love that series so much! My children adore it and it’s great to read aloud (and funny!!). The audiobook with David Tennant is excellent too. And brill if you want the ‘voices’.

Ravenclawlass · 06/04/2021 22:52

Yes!! I must admit I'll be indulging into a little Tennant with them because it's so good (not because I love a bit of Tennant at all ..... ) 😂

🤣
