Primary NQT in private school?

I'm currently doing my PGCE and thinking of applying to do my NQT in a private school (primary). I have a family member who was a teacher and is now SLT, they moved from state to independent and had a great experience so are really encouraging me to apply.

But I wonder if it would be better to do NQT at state school and move to independent later as I'm not sure if I'd want to stay in independent permanently? Would expectations be higher? What do you all think?

You would need to make sure that they would register you for the Early Career teacher (NQT) provision.

I moved from state to private 6 years ago and I've never looked back.

Be careful to check they are in the Teachers' Pension Scheme. Many private schools are pulling out since the employer contributions increased vastly.

Thanks, is this something you'd ask at interview?

I did my NQT in a private school. Personally I think it’s better to do at least a couple of years in state before moving to independent. I think it’s much harder to do it the other way round.

Regarding the pension, the school should make clear in the applicant information whether they are in the TPS or not. It's also legal for private schools not to put new employees into it, but a worse scheme of their own. Ask before you apply. I know retirement must seem a long way off, but it's important.
